This was the best of Netflix in 2022 (and a look ahead to 2023!)

As a subscriber to Netflix you always have something to watch. But what was really good? We list some highlights. This was the best of Netflix 2022.

Read on after the ad.

The best of Netflix 2022

We have seen a lot of series and films on Netflix and will now list the best for you at the end of the year. We choose a winner in different categories, but the runner-ups below are also more than worth your time and attention.

Best New Series: The Sandman

This was clearly the year of fantasy, with House of the Dragon, The Rings of Power and Willow among others. Netflix got involved with The Sandman in its own way. This time no medieval fantasy, but something modern.

Based on the work of Neil Gaiman, The Sandman tells of the god of dreams imprisoned for a hundred years. Then he is released and his kingdom appears to be about to collapse.

This series is at its best when the episodes have their own story. Like the fifth episode, which takes place entirely within an American diner where everyone slowly behaves according to their deepest desires. Or the episode after that, where you go to town with death played insanely by actress Kirby Howell-Baptiste.

It was still exciting whether The Sandman would get a second season, but the high word is finally out: we get more of this unique world and characters.

  • Wednesday
  • The Watchers
  • 1899
  • Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities

Best New Season on Netflix: Better Call Saul (Season 6)

Who would have expected a Breaking Bad spin-off about wacky lawyer Saul Goodman to not only be good, but some say even surpass the original? Now that the series has been completed, we can look back on a very special creation by maker Vince Gilligan that stands very strong on its own.

The series follows Jimmy McGill in his journey towards Saul Goodman, played outrageously by Bob Odenkirk. But he doesn’t carry the series on his own. Also a big round of applause goes to Rhea Seehorn and the rest of the cast.

Unfortunately, this was the last season of Better Call Saul, but there was no other way. The story is finished.

  • Stranger Things (season 4)
  • Umbrella Academy (season 3)
  • Derry Girls (season 3)

Best True Crime: Dahmer – Monsters: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story

True crime fans could enjoy some big hits on Netflix this year. Everyone was talking about the Tinder Swindler earlier this year, but no one could have predicted that the drama series about serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer would become one of the most watched Netflix series ever.

In Ryan Murphy’s series, actor Evan Peters takes on the role of the cold serial killer. Dahmer is well written, acted and directed, but has also received significant criticism. Including relatives who saw themselves in the series, but did not give permission for this. There was also discomfort about the glorification of this murderer. But no matter how you look at it, this is a well-made series.

Runner ups true crime

  • Tinder Swindler
  • Our Father
  • The Most Hated Man on the Planet
  • Conversations With a Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes

Best Animation: Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio

Over the past year, we’ve seen many different new interpretations of Pinocchio, but none left quite an impression like Guillermo del Toro’s. For this film he has opted for stop motion and Del Toro emphasizes the dark sides of the source material.

So this is not a film that you turn on for the little ones, but one that lets you look at the well-known story in a completely different way. Less happy animals and more religion and Nazis.

  • The Sea Beast
  • Love, Death + Robots season 3

Best Picture: RRR

Officially, RRR is not a Netflix Original, but Netflix is the only place where the film (apart from a single cinema in Amsterdam) was and can be watched. In this epic Tollywood film, you follow a tribal protector and a police officer. These gentlemen are each other’s enemies, but a strong friendship develops when they fight against evil together.

RRR shows how incredibly fun film can be. The action scenes are even fatter and dumber than The Fast and the Furious and despite the long duration RRR never gets boring. This is due to a nice variety of pure action, drama, humor and even dance. If you missed RRR this year, just allow yourself to sit down for it one night. This is pure enjoyment.

PS: Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and White Noise will be released on Netflix at the end of the year. We could no longer include these in our list, but they are probably more than worth it.

  • All Quiet on the Western Front
  • The Wonder

Canceled too early: Half Bad: The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself

The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself is already a long title, but after the series was on Netflix for a few weeks, it was changed to Half Bad: The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself. That’s because the series is based on the Half Bad book series, about the son of the most dangerous witches in the world who finds himself between two factions.

Netflix has again canceled a lot of series too early this year, but this one hurt the most as far as we’re concerned because it was such a nice surprise. The series was full of fun characters and had its own style. If Netflix had thrown in better marketing, Half Bad could have been a huge success.

The coming year starts interestingly with, among other things, the non-linear Kaleidoscope with actor Giancarlo Esposito, which episodes you can watch in any order. And Copenhagen Cowboy, a stylish Danish series from the maker of the films Drive and Only God Forgives. You can also watch the film The Pale Blue Eye with Christian Bale in January.

In addition, in the coming year you can expect new seasons of You, Shadow and Bone, Lupine, The Witcher, Heartstopper, Black Mirror, The Crown, Virgin River and many more.
