This Scammer Scammed Music Fans Using AI-Generated Songs

A certain Mourningassassin fooled dozens of singer Frank Ocean’s fans. He sold them several unreleased tracks by the artist which were in fact songs created from scratch using an Artificial Intelligence.

Last month, a ghostwriter used artificial intelligence to generate a Drake and The Weeknd song so viral that Spotify had to take it offline. Today, it is the story of a scammer who managed to sell real-fake pieces of Frank Ocean created using AI for exorbitant prices that is making the headlines. This deception allowed him topocket several thousand dollars.

The scam took place on Discord servers gathering fans of Frank Ocean, the famous American R&B singer. The scammer, who calls himself “Mourningassasin” on the networks, had convinced buyers that the pieces he was making available to them were originals by the artist, and that they had never been published. To reinforce his credibility, he had inserted a real song by the singer in the lot of reproductions offered. This sleight of hand allowed the treble and his musical accomplices to reap a amount around 9000 € (13,000 Canadian dollars).

This kind of scam is bound to become more and more frequent., as Artificial Intelligence has become powerful and affordable. Even the most “hardcore” fans are unable to tell if a voice has been reproduced synthetically or if it is the original artist. Multimodal AIs now make it possible to produce images, videos and reproductions of voices and sounds so realistic that it is increasingly difficult to discern right from wrong.

Some public figures are already starting to take advantage of this confusion. Elon Musk is currently entangled in a legal imbroglio for comments he made regarding the Autopilot function of his cars. To get out of this bad mess, the CEO of Tesla did not hesitate to claim that the recordings of his statements are deepfakes.
