Classic clocks, we love them. That is certainly the case with this copy. Also because it is a watch of an astronaut, namely Michael Collins. This one will now be sold.

Omega Speedmaster of an astronaut

Omega’s Speedmaster is in the history books as the first watch to land on the moon. Of course we know all the astronauts and less the watches. Collins was joined by Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin. So the Speedmaster goes on sale about a year after his death. Collins has turned 90 years old. The watch will be auctioned online through the Heritage Auctions auction platform.

NASA has tested many watches during flights in space. Omega’s Speedmaster was chosen at the time to go to the moon. During the mission, the astronaut carried reference 145.012-68. Safely back on Earth, the three astronauts were invited to dinner to celebrate the mission. The astronauts, like President Nixon, were presented with a gold version of the Omega Speedmaster in honor of the mission.

Unique

The watchmaker produced 1014 gold Speedmasters. Also 34 were made for everyone involved in the Apollo 11 mission. Numbers and the astronaut’s name are engraved on these watches. At the moment, the auction has already started and the first bid is above $100,000. The average return on such a watch is $50,000, but it makes it extra special if it belonged to an astronaut.
