This move by Apple is brilliant

Some people call it brilliant, this move from Apple. The future will tell, but we will probably use it!

It was already coming and it is not completely unexpected. But it’s finally here: companies can make card payments via iPhones. Initially this will be in America and it will be called ‘Tap to Pay’.

This action by Apple can be called smart. The iPhones in question not only accept Apple Pay, but also work with other contactless payment methods, including American Express, Discover, Mastercard and Visa cards. All a business needs to do is download the companion app and get started. The NFC reader in the device does the rest.

The technology is smart, but the way it can be used is smarter. The company’s announcement states that it will not go solo with Tap to Pay. Instead of providing its own infrastructure, Apple partners with other companies.

Logical

But why would Apple share the technology and the function? Often these types of tech companies do not do this. The more you think about it, the more it makes sense. This is because it’s an excellent way for Apple to preemptively evade antitrust complaints, which it faces on several fronts. This is competition law, ie the right that there ‘should’ be competition and that you may not abuse your dominant position. The company does not have to make a huge investment, but it can enter the market. Last, and arguably the most important point, it future-proofs Apple to become the biggest in this field. And that, of course, is the goal.
