This mother tells her children that Sinterklaas does not exist

The entire Sinterklaas circus, mother José (35) prefers to be honest about it with her children: “The best man has not existed for centuries.”

José: “Every year I tell my children Mike (6), Jaylenn (3) and Ezra (1) that we celebrate Sinterklaas because he used to really exist, a long time ago. That he gave presents to poor children. And because we love that about Sinterklaas, we celebrate it every year.

My husband and I have never really let our children believe in Sinterklaas. It saves a lot of questions. Besides, I think it doesn’t make my kids doubt whether other things we tell them are true or not. On the day of the entry, they are stiff with adrenaline, just like all other children, because they are allowed to put their shoes on.

Magic

I’m not afraid that they will tell the ‘secret’ to other children. I think a big part of that is because they don’t realize it’s a secret, so they don’t feel the urge to say anything. There is simply nothing exciting about it. Sometime in October I report it again, between nose and lips: ‘By the way, Sinterklaas is coming again, isn’t it, in a month. Did you know it used to really exist?’ Then I will tell you again about his good deeds. Not a serious conversation, in that period it is not yet alive with them. My six-year-old son is now responding to it, the other two don’t understand it yet, but at least they hear the true story. It works fine for us. Sinterklaas is also a big party for my children every year, which retains its magic.”
