‘This is why my son gets all the time on the iPad’

Katie’s oldest child is eight and has little use for the iPad. ‘He prefers to play outside with his dinos or draw or build’, she says. ‘And our youngest, aged one and a half, will be ready after a few minutes. But with our middle of five it’s a different story.’

Learn to read

Her son is autistic. “And that comes with challenges,” she says. ‘His language skills are lagging behind a bit, but he is doing fantastic in regular primary education. And to what do we partly owe that? That’s right: the iPad. He learned shapes and learned to read thanks to various apps. ‘

The tablet also helps her son find peace, says Katie. ‘After a busy day, he is very tired from all the impressions. He then grabs the iPad, turns on an app or video, and relaxes.’

Slightly different

She has a message to all parents who criticize her: ‘I can understand that they think: that couple easily puts their son in front of a screen, so that they don’t have to worry about him. But I hope that from now on those people will realize that they don’t know the whole story. If your child is a little different from others, you learn to do things differently.’
