this is when you can download the update

It took a while, but during the ‘Unleashed’ event, Apple (via the press release about the AirPods 3, please) finally announced the release date of macOS Monterey. This is what you need to know.

Read on after the ad.

macOS Monterey release is on October 25

Every year, Apple releases a major update for its Macs. This year it’s macOS Monterey and now we finally know when we can download and install the new version. Next week on October 25 when the time comes, Monterey is available as an update in ‘System Preferences > Software Update’. The release brings a slew of new features and improvements to the Mac, including Focus, a Commands app, the new Safari, and Universal Controls.

macOS Monterey was announced at WWDC in June, but first went through a testing phase with a total of ten betas. Now (hopefully) all bugs have been fixed and everyone can install macOS Monterey.

These Macs support macOS Monterey

Do you have a Mac now running on macOS Big Sur? Then there is a very good chance that you will also be able to install Monterey in the future. Check the list below for the complete overview. You can easily see which Mac you have by going to ‘System Preferences > About This Mac’.

  • iMac: Late 2015 or newer
  • iMac Pro: 2017 or later
  • MacBook: Early 2016 or newer
  • MacBook Air: Early 2015 or later
  • MacBook Pro: Early 2015 or later
  • Mac mini: Late 2014 or newer
  • Mac Pro: Late 2013 or newer

This is new!

One of the innovations of macOS Monterey is Universal Control. With this you can control almost all your Apple devices at the same time with one mouse and keyboard. For example, drag an image from your iPad directly into Pages document. Your iPad just needs to be near your Mac for that.

Furthermore, the Assignments app is coming to the Mac and FaceTime is making a big improvement. You get the option to invite anyone to a FaceTime call, including people with a Windows or Android device. You can also use AirPlay to a Mac from your iPhone and iPad. Handy if you want to bring a Netflix series to the bigger picture of your iMac.
