This is when Apple’s M2 chip appears

According to a report by the Commercial Times of Taiwan, Apple plans to update its own chips for the Mac every 18 months. So when can we expect the M2 chip?

Read on after the ad.

When will the M2 chip come?

Apple announced the first Apple Silicon chip for the Mac in November 2020, which was the M1. This year, the M1 family was expanded with the M1 Pro and M1 Max from the new MacBook Pro.

The Commercial Times has now been told from industry sources that Apple Silicon chips are getting a new generation approximately every 18 months. The newspaper concludes from this that the next generation of Apple Silicon, the ‘M2’, will be launched in the second half of 2022. The more advanced chips ‘M2 Pro’ and ‘M2 Max’ are expected to follow in the first half of 2023.

Why the switch?

Before switching to its own chips, Apple relied on Intel to produce new chips. However, this left Apple reliant on Intel’s schedule and unable to release updates to its computers as often as it would have liked. But now that Apple has control of all processor production, the company can update its computers and chips as often as needed. Because customers typically don’t update their Macs as often as their iPhones, a slightly slower update cycle is understandable. iPhone chips are updated every year.

With the end of the year approaching, we won’t have long to wait for the next generation of Macs. There is a rumor about a new 27-inch iMac with mini LED, a new design and ProMotion. It should be published in the spring of 2022. A refreshed MacBook Air is expected in the second half of the year.
