The first SMS was auctioned in Paris for € 107,000

Yesterday (December 21), an extraordinary auction took place in Paris, at which the very first sent SMS in the world was auctioned. It was auctioned for € 107,000 and contained only two words: Merry Christmas. The owner will definitely have a Merry Christmas with this SMS. The information was provided by the Reuters portal.

They auctioned the first SMS for € 107,000 as NFT

Yes, it’s NFT technology again. The NFT (Non-Fungible Token) or Non-Fungible Token is a transaction that takes place in the so-called ledgeri (something like a transaction book), which is also called a blockchain. It gives the owner a mark that proves that only he is the real owner of this digital property. Most of them are pictures or other media, but the world was also shaken by the purchase of the first tweet in the world.

The said SMS was sent on December 3, 1992. It was donated to the auction by Vodafone, in whose network it was sent. It was sent by Vodafone engineer Neil Papworth from his computer in the UK to a manager who received his 2-kilogram Orbitel phone.

NFT technology did not gain real publicity until this year. At the same time, it is not completely new – it has existed since about 2017. As the sale of intangible goods is illegal in France, the Aguttes Auction House wrapped the SMS message in a box and added a code and communication protocol.

The buyer obtained a replica of the original communication protocol through which the SMS was sent. Proceeds from the auction will go to help refugees through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
