this is what’s going on

Since iOS 16, it is no longer possible to stream via AirPlay to your old Apple TV. Is your Apple TV worthless now? Or is there something else going on?

Read on after the ad.

Streaming on old Apple TV stopped working since iOS 16

Do you still have an old Apple TV and use it to stream? Then you may have already found out that some things no longer work. For example, it is no longer possible to stream via AirPlay to the Apple TV 2 or Apple TV 3.

This problem only occurs when you have iOS 16 on your iPhone. When you try to send a movie or series from Disney Plus, HBO Max or other streaming service from your iPhone to the Apple TV, it goes wrong.

It is striking that video sites such as YouTube still work in this way. The problem therefore seems to be specific to protected content (DRM content), such as Disney Plus and HBO Max.

The ‘Synchronous display’ function also still works as usual. This allows you to share the screen of your iPhone on your television. But if you do that via the old Apple TV and then try to start a movie on Disney Plus, you get an error again.

Apple is still silent

Apple has not yet said whether this is a software bug or whether streaming from an old Apple TV is no longer supported at all. The problem currently only occurs with iPhones with iOS 16. On the iPad (iPadOS 16 is not yet available) and on an iPhone with iOS 15, streaming to an old Apple TV still works as usual.
