Android

this is what we know so far

The Pixel 7 is already more than half a year old and it is therefore expected that Google will announce a brand new Pixel during I/O in May, namely the midranger Pixel 7a. The only question is: what can we expect from that phone? We’ll sweep up the rumors that have been floating around so far and see what we can get out of it.

Appearance

In terms of looks, the Pixel 7a doesn’t promise to be very different from the Pixel 7 we know, but that was to be expected. The Pixel 6a also looks like two drops of water on the Pixel 6. So we do see that camera stripe on the back and it is made of metal. The two lenses are in that band. In addition, it seems that the sides are matte and that the rest of the housing is made of recycled aluminum, with a polycarbonate plate instead of a glass back. Given the materials of which the device is probably made, we also expect it to be a bit lighter. In terms of colors, at least a gray variant is expected, although colors such as Carbon, Cotton, Arctic Blue and Jade would also be added. In short: black, white, blue and green.

Screen and size

The Pixel 7a is likely to get a 6.1-inch screen, and it’s likely to be an AMOLED display that can refresh at 90Hz instead of 60Hz. In that respect, the 7a creeps pretty close to the 7. It is expected that the screen is less high in terms of brightness, but there is also a fingerprint scanner in the image. In terms of size, we are looking at 152.4 x 72.9 x 9.0 millimeters.

Camera

Cameras have been an important factor in smartphones for years and that flier also applies to the Pixel 7a. The rumors differ about this: one says that the device will get a completely new sensor, but this would not be the ISOCELL GN1. The question is also whether it is a 50-megapixel main camera or not. It seems to be the 64-megapixel Sony IMX787 sensor, which is a huge improvement on the 12-megapixel main sensor we’ve seen in previous a-devices. In addition, a 13-megapixel Sony IMX712 sensor would be added for wide-angle photos. The selfie camera is likely to be a 13-megapixel camera and it’s thought that there may even be Face Unlock.

Specifications

The Pixel 7a is likely to use Google’s Tensor chip, and it’s even expected to be the latest Tensor: G2. That is not bad at all for a midrange device, so we hope that it is indeed true that Google is going for the latest chip here. It is expected to be combined with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, which is fine for a midranger. And it is also considerably more than the Pixel 6a had: because it came with 6 GB of RAM.

Battery and support

The size of the battery of the Pixel 7a has not yet been leaked, but the device may be able to charge wirelessly at 5 watts. You can also probably charge your Pixel Buds with it, because reverse charging would be present on the device. In terms of update policy, we think this Android 13 device will get three OS upgrades and five years of security patches. In short: Android 16 in 2026.

Release date and price

It is still unclear which release framework we are looking at for this device, but there is talk of Google I/O 2023 that will take place in May. At what price? Probably a higher price than the considerably less heavily armed Pixel 6a, which costs 459 euros.

Do you think we’re right, or do you expect different specifications? Leave it now in the comments.
