This is the world’s largest single-phase battery

Under the project name “Crimson Storage,” the US state of California soaked up the world’s largest single-phase battery. It supplies thousands of households with electricity from the desert.

The energy supply of the future will probably be based on sustainable energy sources such as solar energy, wind power and hydropower. But the technologies still pose a major challenge: security of supply. Because the sun doesn’t shine and the wind doesn’t always blow. In order for electricity to come out of the socket, innovative energy storage is required.

There are various approaches, one of which is and will always be the lithium-ion battery. On this basis took in the California desert recently the world’s largest single-phase battery started operation. This is the second largest battery project on our planet.

The largest single-phase battery supplies up to 47,000 households with energy

The California site covers over 800 hectares and allows for a storage capacity of up to 350 megawatts (1,400 megawatt hours). If you transfer this to the needs of an American household, the battery can supply up to 47,000 houses every year.

Various local energy suppliers are behind the project. Because they recognized the challenges of sustainable energy sources beforehand. District Governor Gavin Newsom recently underscored the importance of the project.

Because if California wants to convert its entire power grid to renewable energy, it will need more such projects across the entire country. The facility, named Crimson Strorage, is also the first major project of this kind under President Joe Biden.

Crimson Storage: Further battery projects are to follow

However, Crimson Storage is not and will not remain the only energy storage facility in the region. The Board of Land Management (BLM) has already approved the Crimson Solar project. In addition to Crimson Strorage, it will one day also include other systems and supply up to 87,500 households with energy.

In addition to the classic lithium-ion batteries, many companies are now researching other solutions. In the future, plastic can also become an energy store, just like the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. Regardless of the type, the latest projects show a trend: If you want to ensure security of supply in the future, you have to rely on intelligent energy storage in the long term.
