Read on after the ad.

iPhone 14 Pro (Max) officially unveiled

Millions of eyes were on Cupertino tonight, where Tim Cook and associates announced the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) among other things. Much was expected of the new flagship, as rumors pointed to the most spectacular iPhone upgrade in years.

The iPhone 14 Pro did not disappoint. For the first time since the iPhone 6s in 2015, the iPhone has a camera with more than 12 megapixels. For the first time since the iPhone X from 2017, the notch at the top of the screen has disappeared. And another unique feature: for the first time, the iPhone supports always-on.

Below we take you through all the innovations of the iPhone 14. We also talk to you about prices, pre-order date and more.

The new design

For years, the iPhone had a large recess at the top of the screen, behind which Apple hid the selfie camera and Face ID technology. That notch has disappeared and makes way for an oval bar.

That oval bar is context sensitive and Apple calls it the Dynamic Island. Depending on what you’re doing with your iPhone, this “island” changes its view. If someone calls you, you will see a notification around the recess. If you turn on a timer, you will see the time count down in this spot. The Dynamic Island also displays background activity, such as when playing music. It’s interactive, so you can control video and music without leaving the current app.

In terms of color you can choose from Space Black, Silver, Gold and Deep Purple. The purple color is a new shade and replaces Sierra Blue.

iPhone 14 Pro camera: first with 48 megapixels

Every year, Apple improves on the iPhone camera – and this year the improvements are significant. Again, the camera module consists of three lenses: wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle and telephoto. The first one is especially interesting, because the wide-angle lens is equipped with a sensor with no less than 48 megapixels.

Still, the iPhone 14 Pro shoots 12-megapixel photos by default, adding the four adjacent pixels together. This creates a better exposed image with little noise. The sensor of the wide-angle is also 65 (!) percent larger, so that it receives more light. This should result in much better quality photos in low light.

If the lighting conditions are good, you can take 48-megapixel photos with the ProRAW format. You shoot photos in very high resolution and they are suitable for editing. Due to the post-processing required, photos in this format are especially suitable for avid iPhone photographers.

The ultra-wide-angle lens and telephoto lens also have a larger sensor. As a result, the telephoto lens performs twice better in low light, and even three times better with the ultra-wide angle.

iPhone 14 Pro screen: with always-on

As in previous years, the Pro series is available in 6.1 and 6.7-inch sizes. What is new is that the devices have an improved screen, which means they support always-on. We already knew this from the Apple Watch Series 5 and newer. With the always-on functionality, the display also shows information when it is in sleep mode. You will then see data such as the time, date and widgets.

You can even set wallpapers that remain visible and dim with always-on. They then turn into a dark version, which is predominantly black. The OLED screen of the iPhone 14 Pro does not consume energy if it has to show the color black. The refresh rate is also much lower. It can refresh at 1Hz (one image per second), which means the iPhone consumes very little energy.

Battery and processor

Of course, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are enhanced by a new chip. This is the A16 Bionic, which Apple claims is about 40 percent faster than the competition. The A16 Bionic has two high-performance cores that are 20 percent faster than the A15. The four high-efficiency cores are more economical and improve battery life.
