This is how you transfer WhatsApp conversations to Telegram
You may have recently switched from WhatsApp to Telegram, or you may be playing with the idea of making the switch. If missing your chat history is holding you back, Telegram now has a solution. With just two steps you directly import the call data from WhatsApp to Telegram.

WhatsApp to Telegram
After the new terms of use for WhatsApp surfaced, people switched ‘en masse’ to other chat services such as Telegram and Signal, although a large part will also remain with WhatsApp, as our AW Poll recently showed. A disadvantage of switching chat services is that the conversations have not been able to move to date – Telegram, however, has found a solution and has now rolled it out on both Android and iOS.
On the one hand this concerns personal conversations that can be transferred to Telegram, but on the other hand it is also possible to transfer group conversations. For Telegram, this chaos at WhatsApp has certainly not done any harm – in January the service managed to win over 100 million new users. It is not known to what extent these users are also active on the platform on a daily basis and whether they also use (a lot) of WhatsApp.
With the import of the most important conversations, Telegram becomes an important competitor to Signal: a chat application that also became immensely popular due to the WhatsApp crisis, but in practice still lacks many functions. The only disadvantage of the ‘new’ apps remains of course that not all friends and acquaintances will simply leave their familiar chat environment, which means that the rise of Telegram and Signal can be short-lived. Even if you can import the conversations, if the contact is not on Signal, that won’t help you much.
Transfer calls
Before performing the steps below, make sure your contact person is active on Telegram. If he or she does not have a Telegram account, it is not possible to transfer the data from WhatsApp to Telegram. For group conversations it also applies that a group chat must be created in advance on Telegram, after which the conversations can be moved. Below I will separately describe the two types of conversation:
Step-by-step plan for personal conversations:
- Open WhatsApp and click on the desired chat conversation
- Click on the three dots, select ‘More’ and ‘Export chat’
- Select whether you want to export the files, photos and videos
- Select Telegram from the Share with menu
- Select the desired chat in Telegram
Step-by-step plan for group discussions:
- Make sure you have a (empty) group conversation in Telegram
- Open WhatsApp and select the desired conversation
- Click on the three dots, select ‘More’ and ‘Export chat’
- Select whether you want to export the files, photos and videos
- Select Telegram from the Share with menu
- Select the desired group chat in Telegram
Chats are preserved
After the above steps have been completed, the call data – including photos, videos and other files, if any – has been transferred to Telegram. You will have to do this per conversation each time: it is not possible to transfer all WhatsApp conversations at once. Please note that others can delete all chat data on Telegram: so be aware that conversation data on Telegram may be lost.
Conversations also remain in WhatsApp – if you keep that app on your phone, the conversations will of course be saved as they were before the transition. Are you planning to export call data from WhatsApp to Telegram? Or do you prefer to stick with WhatsApp? Let us know in the comments at the bottom of the article.
