Install iOS 17 public beta on your iPhone or iPad
Officially, iOS 17 won’t be released until later this year (sometime in September), but if you don’t want to wait that long, you can install the update now. Test versions were previously released for developers, but now the public beta of iOS 17 has also been released.
Not only the iPhone has been updated. A public beta for the iPad has also been released with iPadOS 17. Often, the iOS public beta is quite stable, but is likely to contain some minor bugs. Keep this in mind if you decide to install iOS 17 or iPadOS 17.
Want to try the public beta of iOS 17 or iPadOS 17? Nice! Then follow the step-by-step plan below, because by default you will not see the update. Just check first whether your iPhone can install the update to iOS 17. Even if you decide to install iPadOS 17, you should first check whether your iPad will receive the update to iPadOS 17.
Install iOS 17 public beta on iPhone and iPad
- Visit Apple’s dedicated beta website on your iPhone or iPad;
- Tap on ‘Sign up’ and log in with your Apple ID;
- Click on ‘Agree’ to accept the terms and conditions;
- At the top, click “iOS” or “iPadOS”, depending on which version you want to install;
- Tap on ‘Enroll your iOS device’ under the heading ‘Get started’;
- To be on the safe side, back up your iPhone or iPad using the Finder on Mac or iTunes on Windows (a backup to iCloud won’t do);
- On your iPhone or iPad, go to ‘Settings > General > Software update’ and under ‘Beta updates’ choose ‘iOS 17 Public Beta’;
- Install the update to iOS 17.
Always make a backup
As mentioned, this is a test version of iOS 17 and iPadOS 17. That means that you can sometimes encounter errors or crazy problems. So make sure you always make a backup of your iPhone or iPad, so that your data is safe if something goes wrong. In the video below we show you step by step how to do this.
Note: backing up to iCloud is not enough. It is automatically updated if you have installed iOS 17. So make sure you back up via the Finder or iTunes.
iOS 17 for iPhone: Here’s what’s new
The public beta of iOS 17 gives your iPhone some really cool features. First of all, the Phone, FaceTime and Messages apps have been thoroughly overhauled. That’s nice, but one of the most notable new features is Standby.
If you tilt the iPhone (and have it plugged in), you get a full-screen view with useful information. This is especially useful if you regularly put your iPhone on your bedside table. You can then use it as a kind of information hub, where you can show different types of clocks, favorite photos or widgets.
That’s not all! AirDrop got a new feature called NameDrop. Safari is getting a major update and the Health app has all kinds of new useful features. In addition, Apple Music now includes common playlists that you can enjoy together.
