Discord is a chat app and is mainly popular with gamers because of the extensive audio options. However, the app is a great way to chat for anyone. With these Discord tips you really get the most out of it.

Read on after the ad.

Discord tips: game on!

Every gamer has probably heard of chat app Discord. The app is often used to talk to each other while playing online games. Discord has grown over the years into a very good app where groups can talk to each other about different topics. And it is no longer only gamers who use it.

With Discord you become a member of different servers, which are groups that gather around specific topics. For example, there are groups of friends that have their own server and fans of specific podcasts also get their own place. There are both public servers with a lot of people, and private servers where you only come if you get a link or an invitation.

Discord is similar to apps like Slack in that each server has channels around specific topics for chatting. What is special about Discord is that in addition to text channels you can also create audio channels where you can talk to each other. That’s great, but with these tips you can get even more out of the app.

Discord – Talk & chat together

1. Hide what you don’t want to see

Discord servers can quickly become very overwhelming with all those different channels. This is especially annoying if there are channels that you are not interested in anyway. Fortunately, you can easily hide it.

To hide channels, long press on the channel. Then choose ‘Mute channel’ and then ‘Until I turn it on again’. Then the channel is light gray between the other channels.

Then tap the name of the server and pull the slider at the ‘Hide muted channels’ at the new screen. Now you will no longer see the channels that you are not interested in anyway.

2. Take control of your notifications

You can arrange notifications in two places in the app. First of all, within the general settings, which you find by tapping your avatar at the bottom right. Then scroll down and find the option ‘Notifications’ under the heading ‘app settings’. There you can indicate that you do not want to receive notifications on Discord.

You get more options if you tap the name of a server you are a member of and then choose ‘Notifications’. Then you can indicate, among other things, that you only want to see notifications if you are mentioned, and that you do not want a notification if ‘@everyone’ is used, whereby everyone in the server will receive a notification. It is useful that you also see the channels that you have previously muted.

3. Nitro: worth paying or not?

You can use Discord for free, but by paying you get more features. This subscription comes in two flavors: Nitro Basic and Nitro. But is that worth the money?

Nitro Basic costs 2.99 euros per month and offers you larger uploads, personalized emoji and a Nitro badge on your profile. That hardly adds anything for the average user.

For Nitro you pay 9.99 euros per month, which allows you to upload much larger files, stream in HD and use multiple avatars and biographies on different servers. It is also possible to join more servers, type longer messages, use animated avatars and more. It is a relatively expensive subscription, but it may be worth it for heavy users of the app.

Nice is that you can gift Nitro to someone else. You can find this option by tapping your avatar in the bottom right corner and then choosing ‘Give Nitro as a gift’ under the heading ‘Billing settings’.

4. Tips to connect Discord with other apps and services

Also useful with Discord: you can connect all kinds of services. To do this, tap your avatar at the bottom right, choose ‘Connections’ and then ‘Add’. You will immediately see the list of apps and services that you can connect to Discord.

One of the nicest apps to connect to Discord is Spotify. You can then show others what you are listening to. If you make videos on YouTube or Twitch, you can link those accounts to provide a private account for your subscribers.

You can link Twitter to forward tweets to Discord. You can also connect to Battle.net, League of Legends, PayPal, PlayStation Network, Steam and Xbox, among others.

5. A different name on each server

While only Nitro allows you to set a different avatar and biography on each server, a free account only allows you to set a different name on each server. To do this, tap the name of the server and then tap ‘Edit server profile’. There you enter another nickname that is only visible on that server.

6. Organize your servers

Are you a member of many different servers? Then we have some extra Discord tips for you. You can easily organize the servers in two ways. First of all, you can hold down the icon of a server and then move it.

What you may not have known is that you can also create folders in this way, as you do within iOS. Press and hold a server and drag it over another server. Then release to create a folder.
