The social network next door.de wants to make the online community experienceable offline as well. In the location portrait we take a look behind the scenes of the Berlin start-up.

How social is social media? In view of the recurring reports of hate and hate speech on Facebook, Twitter and Co., the answer is often disappointing. The social network next door.de however, no longer wants to accept trolls and bots of any kind.

Instead, real people in their own neighborhood should move closer together. The mission of nebenan.de: Let social media actually become social.

Nebenan.de does not collect any user data

Sharing tools and groceries, selling used goods or organizing mutual aid campaigns – these are just a few examples where nebenan.de would like to network users from the same area online. In this way, the members should also support each other in reality.

While the concept of nebenan.de is a bit reminiscent of a Facebook group, the business model of the Berlin start-up differs from other social networks in one important respect: the team is not interested in user data. The platform therefore dispenses with profiling, micro-targeting and third-party tracking.

This is how the social network nebenan.de works

The social media platform from Berlin has been around since 2015. The network now has more than 2.5 million active users from over 10,000 neighborhoods. Together with around 160 employees, the founders Ina Remmers and Till Behnke work at the Berlin headquarters to connect the online community offline as well.
