This is how big the iPhone 14 camera gets (check the difference with the X)

The iPhone 14 Pro is getting a major camera update – literally and figuratively. That is not the first time this year. A 3D designer illustrates in a new render how the camera island has grown over the years. What a difference!

Read on after the ad.

iPhone camera through the years

The render from above was made by Ian Zelbo, who often makes 3D designs of upcoming iPhones. He designs them based on leaked information, such as CAD drawings. The iPhone 14 Pro that can be seen in this render is therefore probably very close to the final design.

The image shows five iPhones in a row. The first is the 2017 iPhone X, which was armed with no more than two camera lenses. The iPhone XS from a year later cannot be seen, because the size of the camera module remained unchanged. The iPhone 11 Pro was the first with a triple camera system.

With the iPhone 12 Pro, the camera island became slightly thicker, partly because Apple improved the wide-angle lens. The difference is more visible with the iPhone 13 Pro; Apple equipped the device with significantly larger lenses: both the wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle and telephoto lenses improved.

48 MP camera for iPhone 14 Pro

The size is also increasing with the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) – which Apple will announce in September. Apple puts an impressive 48-megapixel camera in it, which increases the physical size of the wide-angle lens by about five to ten percent. It is the first time that the iPhone shoots pictures with more than 12 megapixels.

A big advantage of a 48 MP camera is that the photos contain more details. You see this difference especially when you view a photo in a large format, or zoom in. Incidentally, the main camera of the iPhone 14 Pro can still shoot pictures with 12 megapixels, by merging four pixels: pixel binning. With this, Apple ensures that the photo quality also remains good in the dark. The 48 MP camera also enables 8K video on an iPhone for the first time.

Release

We will know more about the iPhone 14 Pro in a month, because then the annual iPhone event is expected. We think Apple will announce the devices on or around September 13. The pre-order starts the following Friday, after which you may have the iPhone 14 Pro at home on Friday 23 September.
