Snapdragon 888

Every year, in the summer, Qualcomm gives its most powerful new chipset a small facelift. It comes in the form of the Plus version, which is an overclocked variant with more powerful performance. The Snapdragon 888 Plus has now been announced, the chipmaker announced in a press release.

Once again, Qualcomm has managed to extract more power from the ‘prime core’ of its current Snapdragon 888. The Plus version has a clock speed of 2.995 GHz, so just under 3 GHz. The regular variant, on the other hand, reached 2.84 GHz with its processor cores, so it’s a 20 percent performance gain.

Improved AI engine

In addition, Qualcomm has tinkered with the AI engine, or the part of the chip that is separate from the processor and that performs the calculations for applications based on artificial intelligence. The new Hexagon 780 delivers 32 TOPS, which stands for Tera Operations Per Second. With the Snapdragon 888, the AI engine was good for 26 TOPS.

Besides the improvements we just discussed, the Snapdragon 888 Plus is completely identical to its older brother. It still comes with the Snapdragon X60 modem for 5G and the Adreno 660 GPU. The manufacturers Xiaomi, Motorola, ASUS and Vivo already indicated that they will release a phone that runs with the Snapdragon 888 Plus. We expect the first devices in the third quarter of 2021.

Recently, a lot of details leaked about the successor to the Snapdragon 888. And we don’t mean this Plus version, but the chipset that will get a place in most top phones next year. You can discover all the known details here.
