this has all changed in iOS 16.2

Apple introduced changes for live events in iOS 16.2. What exactly are these ‘live activities’? Read everything you need to know about the new feature and the changes in iOS 16.2 here.

Read on after the ad.

New feature in iOS 16: live activities

One of the new features in iOS 16 is live activities. This allows apps to show a special kind of notifications on the lock screen and the new Dynamic Island of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The feature is extremely useful with some apps. For example, you can immediately see live football results on the lock screen (or in the Dynamic Island), while the match is still going on. Or you can see how long your food will be on the way once you have ordered something.

An app must have built-in support for the function. Developers are therefore well on their way to doing this with their apps. iPhoned put together what you need to know about the new feature in iOS 16.

1. How to Turn Live Activities On (or Off)

Live activities are automatically on for apps that support the new feature. Want to know which app supports live activities? Or do you want to disable the new function? This is how you check whether an app supports live activities and disable the new function:

  1. Go to Settings’;
  2. Scroll down to see the overview of the apps;
  3. Choose the app from which you want to set up live activities;
  4. Turn live activities on or off with the toggle next to the feature.

2. Hide live activities on your home screen

Live Activities is visible on your home screen, even if it’s still locked. Are you fond of your privacy? Then it is a smart plan to hide live activities when your iPhone is locked.

You do this by going to ‘Settings’ and choosing ‘Face ID and access code’. After entering your access code, you can scroll to the heading ‘Access when locked’, below it says ‘Live activities’. If you enable this feature, you can access live activities even when the screen is locked. If you turn this off, live activities will be hidden.

By hiding your live activities on a locked home screen, no one can easily access the apps that are currently showing a live activity. Very handy if you leave your phone unattended at a party!

3. In iOS 16.2: Control how often live events update

In iOS 16.2, live activities have been updated again, with the new feature that you can determine how often the live activity is updated. Having a continuous live activity on your home screen naturally costs quite a bit of battery. That is why Apple offers the possibility to set the app to update itself less often, in order to save energy.

The other way around is of course also possible: it is also possible to set the app to update live activities more often. For example, during an exciting football match you can set the live activity to update more often, so that you immediately receive a notification of a goal that is scored.

You set how often a live activity is updated by going to ‘Settings’ to an app that supports the new function. If you then tap the app, the option ‘Live Activities’ will appear. By tapping on ‘Live Activities’ it is possible to set how often an app updates the new feature.
