This feature will soon make AirTags even more secure

Apple and Google are teaming up to prevent unwanted tracking via AirTags and similar devices. Your iPhone will soon also warn you about tags from other brands.

Read on after the ad.

Tracking via AirTags

Apple’s AirTags are very useful for keeping an eye on your luggage, but they are also often used for malicious purposes. Because of the small size and the accurate location determination, they work excellently to keep an eye on someone secretly. In other words: to be tracked like a piece of luggage.

Since the initial release of the AirTags, Apple has done a lot to prevent tracking as much as possible. The AirTags themselves will make noise after a while if they detect motion and were no longer near the owner. In addition, you will receive a notification on your iPhone that an AirTag is moving with you. That was later even extended to Android devices.

Apple and Google are working together

Now Apple and Google are going to expand this collaboration even further. The two companies make this known in a press release. Together they have submitted a specification for trackers. This should apply to all tracking devices in the future and make it easier to detect unwanted tracking. Because all devices have to work in a certain way, all manufacturers can build in notifications in case a tracker is near you for a while.

Other companies that make trackers, such as Tile, Chipolo, Samsung, Eufy and Pebblebee have already said they want to support the specification.

Notifications for other trackers

In principle, nothing will change in the working method of the AirTags for now. But when this standard is officially launched in 2024, it will open new possibilities for Apple to warn you about unwanted tracking. For example, your iPhone can also notify you if a tracker from, for example, Tile moves with you.

Because the standard comes from Apple itself, you almost certainly know that the AirTags already comply with it. Or at least that the official specification will be added via a software update. In short, if you buy an AirTag you already know for sure that it is future-proof. Below we have listed the best deals.
