This dark fantasy saga continues on Netflix on Thursday – but fans are disappointed
Based on the successful books by Andrzej Sapkowski, the fantasy series about monsters, witchers and prophecies is entering its third round on Netflix.
Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) is a so-called witcher. He has some level of magic and is a loner hunting monsters for money. Destiny soon leads him to the sorceress Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) and the young princess Ciri (Freya Allan), whom he sees from now on as his foster daughter and who has a special gift. They must learn to stand up for each other and find their way in this world that seems doomed. The third season will primarily deal with a new enemy, which should also play a role over the coming seasons and with the training for Ciri. The first edition of “The Witcher” Season 3 is from June 29, 2023 exclusively at Netflix available to stream. Part 2 will follow on July 27, 2023.

The Witcher will change
With Henry Cavill, the series based on the “The Witcher” universe, which fans previously knew mainly through the underlying books and the video games created by CD Project Red, had found the seemingly perfect cast for the grumpy witcher. Not only because of his physique and his acting skills, but also because Cavill himself is a big fan of the template and the character and considered it an honor to be able to embody him now. But the third season will be his last appearance as Geralt, because Cavill has for unknown reasons leave the show. What is obvious, however, is that he no longer felt comfortable with the way his series character was being written and with the way the series’ plot was progressing in general. According to his statements and those of the book fans, the series adaptation seems to be too far removed from the original in terms of content. Well shall Liam Hemsworth standing in for Cavill and henceforth embody the witcher. According to showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, the transition should be flawless: “It’s very lore accurate. It’s very close to what was set out in the books and I think this change will be quite flawless.” (German: “It’s very lore true. Even though the series has struggled with this controversy since the release of the second season, the viewing figures seem to be good enough because Netflix is already working on the fourth seasonaccording to production designer Andrew Laws: “Obviously, [we’re in the] early stages
[and] are meant to be shooting later in the year, but I have all my scripts, so we’ve got a lot to work with. We’re concepting and it’s exciting, it’s really exciting. Especially off the back of Season 3, we’ve got a lot of shoulders to stand on, so to speak, but we’re well underway.” (German: “Obviously we’re still in the early stages and we’re supposed to be shooting later in the year, but I have all my scripts so we have quite a bit to work with. We create concepts and it’s exciting, it’s really exciting. Especially after Season 3, we kind of have a lot to lean on, but we’re on the right track.”) And even the fifth season is a sure thing, because Netflix has already ordered it.
