Privacy and Security Updates
The announcement includes the rollout of a number of additional features, including support for authenticator apps for two-step verification. Examples of these types of apps are Authy, Google Authenticator, and Microsoft Authenticator.
In addition, the smart home manufacturer adds CAPTCHA to its products. CAPTCHA is a simple test that ensures that forms cannot be filled in automatically by a computer.
Ring will also be rolling out a new automated self-service process in the coming weeks. This self-service process allows Ring customers to securely transfer ownership of used Ring devices.
End-to-end encryption for video
After a successful technical preview of video end-to-end encryption in the United States, Ring is now launching end-to-end encryption for video in the rest of the world. The feature works with phones from Android 8 and iOS 12 and above.
End-to-end encryption means that the connection between two devices is encrypted. In order to view the video images, you must have a key and that key is stored on the customer’s phone, so that only the customer can decrypt and view recordings on his phone. Ring already encrypts the videos by default when uploaded to the cloud and stored on Ring’s servers, and will continue to do so if a user does not want to use video end-to-end encryption.
