Crooked eyes or disapproving comments? These parents will be concerned about whether others approve of their behavior. So they feel free to travel alone. Completely guilt-free.

Judith (40), mother of Giulia (11), Elio (7), Lotta (4) and Sara (3).

“I love those kids to infinity, but I also like to have time for myself. Last year I went on holiday alone for the first time and I want to do that again this year. I also book a night in a hotel once every two months, alone. Always to a city. During the day I will look at something nice and then go out for dinner on my own, delicious!

Once back in the hotel I spoil myself with cheeses, whiskey, sweets and sometimes a joint. I can also shower five times, very extensive, because I don’t have much time for that at home. Those trips are wonderful, if only to be able to poop in peace. That’s really my spa moment. The next day I go home fully charged.”

Workation

Saskia (41), mother of Maureen (12) and Camiel (10).

“In October I went to Croatia on a ‘workation’ with two colleagues. Really away from the family rhythm. A week of nice weather, hard work, lots of talking and drinking cocktails.

What I love is that I don’t have to look at the clock or take someone into account. Everything is fine at home. My husband can keep things running and the children are also becoming more independent. It does require some organization in advance, but it is well worth it. We sometimes text or facetime in between, but only for fun.

“A lot of men go on business trips without any problems, without anyone trying to make them feel guilty”

I am always amazed that it is always such an issue for women to be away from home for a period of time, while many men can go on business trips without anyone trying to make them feel guilty.”

Life just goes on

Caty (47), son Thijs (14).

“In October and November I was away from home for five weeks for work in Frankfurt and training in Thailand. I am self-employed and work when necessary. I am often away, but also often at home – it comes in fits. I also regularly attend courses abroad in the field of business and personal development.

“This allows me to do what I want undisturbed and that makes me a better mother”

When I’m away from home for a long time, my husband takes care of our son and life goes on as usual. He doesn’t call me with questions about housekeeping, what to cook or to tell me that my son misses me. On the contrary, they enjoy being together and manage just fine. That was already the case when Thijs was even smaller. That is precisely why I can do what I want undisturbed and that makes me a better mother.”
