These iOS 16 features are exclusive to new iPhones

This week Apple announced a lot of cool features that are coming to the iPhone with iOS 16. But unfortunately there are also functions for which you need at least an iPhone XS/XR, iPhone 11 or iPhone 13. Below you can read which functions you may have to miss.

iOS 16 features for iPhone XS and later

Many of the iPhone features that Apple presented are only available for iPhones with an A12 Bionic chip or newer. This means you need an iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone 11 (Pro), iPhone SE (2nd or 3rd generation), iPhone 12 (Pro), or iPhone 13 (Pro).

Do you have an iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, or iPhone X? Then your device does have iOS 16 support, but you still have to miss some functions. Here they are:

Live text in videos. In iOS 15, Apple introduced the Live Text feature. With that you copy text from photos, and from iOS 16 this also works with videos. The feature works in Photos and Safari, among others.

Quick Tasks in Live Text. Calling telephone numbers, visiting websites, translating text, converting currencies and more: via Live Text you only need one tap to perform the action.

New Languages ​​for Live Text. With iOS 16, Live Text also recognizes Japanese, Korean, and Ukrainian texts. But strangely enough, you need an iPhone XR/XS or newer for that.

Bring up topic. In images, you can easily bring out the subject, or isolate it by removing the background. It works with Photos, Screenshots, Quick View, Safari, and more.

Send emoji via Siri. If you send a message via Siri, you can also send an emoji. You shout something like “Emoji with happy face.” It is available in seven languages, but Dutch is not among them.

Add medicines with iPhone camera. Pointing the iPhone’s camera at a drug’s label adds it to the Health app. Unfortunately, for now, the feature is only available to users in the US.

Search images in more apps. With iOS 16, Spotlight also uses information from images in Messages, Notes, and Files to search. Spotlight searches for people, scenes, animals or texts in images, among other things.

New Dictation Function† The dictation function gets a new interface. This allows you to easily switch between your voice and typing on the screen, because the keyboard remains in the picture. So you can type, move the cursor, and insert QuickType suggestions without having to stop dictating.

iOS 16 features for iPhone 11 and later

Live captions. Live Captioning accessibility features enable the deaf and hard of hearing to receive live captioning during a phone or FaceTime call. The feature also works with a meeting app, social media app, streaming media or when talking to someone.

DeskView. With the new macOS Ventura, you can use your iPhone as a webcam. You can enable the Desk View function, which simultaneously shows the user’s face and a top view of the desk. But you do need the ultra-wide-angle lens of the iPhone 11 or newer for that.

iOS 16 features for iPhone 13 and later

Foreground blur in portrait photos. Portrait mode lets you blur objects in the foreground of a photo for a more realistic depth-of-field effect.

Improved quality in Movie mode. With the Film mode you can make videos with a depth-of-field effect on an iPhone 13 (Pro). That’s now more accurate on faces and around the edges of hair and glasses.
