It took a while, but gamers are happy: Google and Valve are working together to bring Steam to ChromeOS. This way you can better use Chromebooks for gaming. At the moment, Steam for ChromeOS is still in beta, but when it comes, here’s what to expect. And, not unimportant: on which Chromebooks.
Steam on ChromeOS
Let’s start with the Chromebooks, because they are essential to use Steam. If you have an old animal that has been helping you for five years, then you are doing well in terms of sustainability, but unfortunately Steam will pass you by. It’s only available on select Chromebooks released in the past two years. To run Steam on ChromeOS, you’ll need at least an 11th or 12th Gen Intel Core i3, i5, or i7 processor, or an AMD 5000-C series Ryzen 3, or an even better processor with at least 8GB of RAM.

Gaming on your Chromebook
Okay, you’ll have the hardware soon, but what about the games? Unfortunately, it is not possible to play the entire Steam library on your Chromebook. Google has selected 100 games that it has tested on Chromebooks. Some games need a little extra attention to run well on ChromeOS, but others work like a charm (especially on the more expensive laptops). That’s mainly because Steam doesn’t run on Windows, but Linux. Thanks to Valve Proton, certain games can be translated from Windows to Linux, but that has to be done game by game.
