Five malicious Chrome extensions detected
McAfee experts have discovered five Chrome browser extensions that spy on users. These are the extensions Netflix Party, Netflix Party 2, FlipShope, Full Page Screenshot Capture and AutoBuy Flash Sales. According to McAfee, they’ve already been downloaded more than 1.4 million times, so this isn’t just a theoretical threat.
The fact that the extensions do exactly what they promise users in the first few weeks is particularly perfidious. Only then do they turn out to be malware that taps browser activity, foisted affiliate links and engaged in phishing. In some cases, users are not even aware of this, even if privacy is undermined (source: McAfee).
Especially the extension Netflix Party is popular, with around 800,000 downloads. In fact, the extension offers the ability to watch Netflix series and movies at the same time. Nevertheless, it should be uninstalled as soon as possible to protect your own data. Google has already removed the two Netflix extensions, but the other three are currently still available.
There are also dangers lurking on the phone, as our video shows:
Google Chrome: Teleparty instead of Netflix Party
The extension is recommended for watching films and series together teleparty, which actually used to be called Netflix Party. The malicious extension is a clone that has nothing to do with the original extension. The change of name may have contributed to some users opting for the malicious extension.
