Electric cars are good for the environment. At least the Stromer are sold with this argument and compared to combustion engines there is something to it. But the success of the Stromer is still measurably low – at least in comparison with a very specific electric vehicle.

Thanks to e-vehicles: the world needs less oil
If you buy an electric car, you can do something for the environment. No climate gas is emitted while driving, in contrast to petrol and diesel, the charging current from the home socket or wall box is also cheaper. For the driver, the difference in the personal CO₂ balance can be significant. But how does it look overall?
Experts from BloombergNEF investigated this question in a study. The result: Electric vehicles will reduce the global demand for crude oil. It did increase to around 43.7 million barrels between 2015 and 2021. But electrically powered vehicles are 3.3 percent less been needed. In the six years, this positive impact has even doubled (source: BloombergNEF).

The data comes from the so-called “Zero Emission Vehicle Transition Council: Progress Dashboard”, which is maintained by BloombergNEF on an ongoing basis. According to this, as of the fourth quarter of 2021, 13 percent of all global car sales are electric cars. Thereof 9 percent pure electric cars, Plug-in hybrids account for 4 percent.

Electric scooters – so much better than an electric car
The 3.3 percent of unused oil corresponds to around 1.5 million barrels. According to BloombergNEF, that’s about twice the amount of oil imports that Germany got from Russia in 2021. However, the minus is not only due to e-cars. The one by far Two- and three-wheel electric vehicles have the largest share:
Such electric scooters are popular in many Asian countries and are becoming more and more popular there. A big advantage are the easily replaceable batteries, with which you can continue driving quickly. Make such electric vehicles 67 percent of the avoided oil consumption – a multiple of the e-cars worldwide.
Especially in Asian cities, the vehicles are more practical than even small (electric) cars. There is also the advantage of the exchangeable batteries – long charging times as with e-cars are a thing of the past. So if you include the greatest possible environmental benefit in your mobility decisions, you should also think about small electric scooters.
