Advantages:

  • Very hygienic thanks to the bag
  • Great coverage
  • Very quiet

Disadvantages:

  • Moderate performance on carpet and edges

The first device in our overview is worthwhile for everyone a house dust allergy plagued will. Thanks to its bag, the Bosch vacuum cleaner is more hygienic than models without a bag. Since the entire bag is emptied, you only come into limited contact with the sucked-in dust – a good solution for allergy sufferers (source: Ökotest, sources used are linked below). The vacuum cleaner bag also belongs in the residual waste.

Next to the Range of almost 15 meters Stiftung Warentest praises the suction power on different surfaces: The Bosch vacuum cleaner gets almost everything, only on carpets it is not completely convincing. You can get the vacuum cleaner online, which has an output of 763 watts, for around 200 euros (view at Amazon). As with the other vacuum cleaners in our selection, there are attachments for different floors, furniture, upholstery and joints.

Advantages:

  • Light weight
  • Robust processing
  • Very absorbent but…

Disadvantages:

  • This sometimes complicated handling
  • High power consumption
  • Cable length of just under 9 meters

You don’t have to spend 200 euros for a good vacuum cleaner. You can get our price tip from Rowenta for just over 100 euros (view at Saturn). According to the reviews at Saturn, it is very powerful at full power, which means that you sometimes need some strength to handle it. In addition, according to Stiftung Warentest, it only performs adequately in hard-to-reach corners in the apartment. However, the bag vacuum cleaner is the lightweight in our overview at 4.9 kg, the other devices weigh over 7 kg.

The power consumption of the Rowenta vacuum cleaner is quite high with an output of almost 818 watts. And no: a higher performance does not mean that the vacuum cleaner sucks better. The “interaction of device, suction pipe, nozzle design and air path” is relevant (source: Federal Environment Agency). So you have to make compromises here, just like with the rather cheap looking design. But if you don’t attach much importance to this and are looking for a device for a small budget, you will find a good alternative in the Rowenta.

Advantages:

  • Low energy consumption
  • Hygienic thanks to the bag
  • Robust processing

Disadvantages:

With the Miele vacuum cleaner, you get another model with a bag that, according to Stiftung Warentest, scores very well in almost all test criteria, but above all with its robustness. However, the testers complain about its suction power, as it doesn’t always catch everything on edges. However, with a measured power of only 550 watts, it generates one low power consumptionwhich speaks for its eco-balance.

At around 250 euros (see Amazon), the Miele is the most expensive model in our overview. However, a vacuum cleaner is also a long-term purchase that can be worth the money.

Philips: Chic, but with compromises

Philips PowerPro Expert FC9741/09 (Black)

Philips PowerPro Expert FC9741/09 (Black)

The bagless vacuum cleaner from Philips looks great on the outside, but is a bit complicated when it comes to handling.

The price may be higher now. Price as of 06/11/2022 10:41 am

Advantages:

  • less garbage
  • Robust processing
  • Chic design

Disadvantages:

  • Moderate performance on carpet
  • High power consumption
  • Complicated handling

If you are looking for a bagless vacuum cleaner, the PowerPro Expert model from Philips has the edge in Stiftung Warentest. It doesn’t suck the dust into a bag, but into a dust container. You can empty it and reuse it. That is though the more sustainable option in contrast to the bag models, but less hygienic.

The Philips model offers the same nozzles as the devices shown above, supplemented by an additional carpet nozzle. On the other hand, Stiftung Warentest criticizes the handling because it cannot suck crumbs off the carpet so well and is difficult to empty. In addition, the model has an output of almost 920 watts much higher power consumption than our other recommendations. So you have to make compromises with this test winner, but at well under 200 euros (see Saturn) it is again a cheaper model – and its chic design immediately catches the eye.

Cable or battery – which is more sustainable?

In our selection you have already seen that you can pay attention to sustainability even with vacuum cleaners. But is it really that sustainable to rely on corded vacuum cleanerswhen the trend is increasingly towards cordless vacuum cleaners?

Stiftung Warentest has therefore the Life cycle assessment of cordless and corded vacuum cleaners looked closer. They evaluated the life cycle of the devices with so-called environmental damage points, which are made up of the criteria of production, transport, use and disposal. The testers came to the conclusion: “With their power consumption alone, cable vacuum cleaners accumulate almost as many damage points as cordless vacuum cleaners in their entire life cycle.” But that only applies when using the vacuum cleaner at full power. If you reduce this, less power is consumed, but the device may not work as well as a result.

What does sustainability actually mean? In our GIGA article we explain it to you:

In addition, speaks for the cordless vacuum cleaner that the Battery replaceable in most cases is. If the device gives up the ghost at some point, the entire vacuum cleaner does not necessarily have to be disposed of, only the battery.

In the comparison, Stiftung Warentest also makes it clear that social consequences regarding the production of rechargeable batteries were not taken into account. However, this is particularly important when extracting lithium and cobalt, which is relevant for the manufacture of batteries. The mining of lithium in (primarily) South America, whether for cordless vacuum cleaners, e-cars or smartphones, pollutes and reduces the groundwater. This not only has consequences for nature and wildlife, but also for the (indigenous) population (source: Deutschlandfunk). In addition, the mine work to extract cobalt has been criticized – illegal child labor is only one of the points (source: Deutschlandfunk).

When comparing cordless and corded vacuum cleaners, you should pay attention to these points. Especially when it comes to sustainability, the social aspect is a very important one. Cordless vacuum cleaners can therefore be viewed critically, but corded vacuum cleaners also have disadvantages.
