4 innovations for the iPad
In an episode of The Mac Rumors Show Ross Young shares Apple’s future plans for the iPad. Young has worked in the display supply chain and has trusted sources close to the Apple fire – especially when it comes to displays.
The episode discusses four major iPad changes. We list them below.
1. Biggest iPad Ever
In the episode, Young repeats an earlier rumor: a giant 14.1-inch iPad iPro is in the works. Now the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is Apple’s largest tablet yet. Such a large tablet is ideal if you use an iPad as a laptop, for example, because multitasking becomes a lot easier.
Reportedly, the 14.1-inch iPad Pro does not have a mini LED, but a traditional LCD screen. Apple is expected to launch the tablet in early 2023. We think this will be during a spring event, in March or April.
2. OLED screens
In 2024, according to Young, all iPad Pro models will be equipped with an OLED screen. Now the 12.9-inch iPad Pro 2021 uses mini LED. A mini-LED screen has many of the characteristics of OLED, with great contrasts and deep blacks. But no matter how beautiful mini-LED is on the iPad Pro and MacBooks, it doesn’t look as nice as OLED.
3. Camera under the screen
The iPad will be the first Apple device to have the camera positioned below the screen. Ross Young reports this. The technology is easier to integrate into an iPad, because of the larger screen with fewer pixels per inch.
Young talks about a TrueDepth camera, the system needed for Face ID and currently only used with the iPad Pro. Placing the parts under the screen can make the iPad even more borderless than it already is. Young thinks that the iPad with TrueDepth camera can appear as early as next year, well before Apple brings the technology to the iPhone.
4. Foldable iPad
Another thing the iPad will get before the iPhone: a foldable screen. According to Young, Apple is in the process of introducing an iPhone with a folding screen, but the company is not able to provide enough cover glass to obtain. With a foldable iPad this would not be a limiting factor. It is not yet clear when we can expect the first foldable iPad. According to previous rumors, this will not be before 2025.
