There is no way around the iPad
It’s no secret that the iPad dominates the tablet market. In the fourth quarter of 2022, however, the dominance has assumed astonishing proportions. Only Samsung can hold its ground against the Apple competition. The iPad dominance is remarkable for one reason in particular.
After years of abstinence, Google returns to the tablet market with the Pixel Tablet 2023. The US group has set itself a difficult task, because 13 years after the presentation of the first iPad, Apple still dominates the tablet business like no other.
Almost every second tablet sold is an iPad
Numbers from the fourth quarter of 2022 show how great the dominance is Apple’s market share at 49.2 percentaccording to market researchers from IDC (source: PhoneArena). Or differently: Almost every second tablet, which went over the counter between October and December 2022, sported an apple logo. Compared to the previous year, this results in a whopping plus of 28.8 percent. Overall, Apple sold 22.5 million iPads.
was runner-up Samsung. The South Koreans were able to slightly increase their market share in Q4/22, from 15.8 percent in the same period of the previous year to now 16.8 percent. All in all, Samsung sold 7.7 million Galaxy Tabs.
All other tablet manufacturers in the top 5 suffered heavy losses. The ones at were particularly large Lenovo. This was about 49.9 percent down. Also deep in the red: Amazon and Huawei.
When looking at the Total market shares by 2022 the following picture emerges: Apple in first place with 38 percent, followed by Samsung with 18.6 percent. The bronze medal goes to Amazon with 9.8 percent, followed by Lenovo with 7.1 percent. Huawei is in 5th place with a market share of 5.6 percent. The remaining manufacturers share 20.9 percent.
New iPad models from Apple:
Disgrace for manufacturers of Android tablets
Apple’s dominance is particularly notable from one point of view: 2022 was actually not a good iPad year. The new Pro models are minimal upgrades with an M2 chip, and with the 10th generation of the iPad, Apple has really gotten itself in trouble in the eyes of many. Only the 5th generation iPad Air, which was introduced in the spring, was a worthwhile update thanks to the M1 chip. The fact that Apple is so successful despite this “we only do as much as is necessary” strategy is one Disgrace for the manufacturers of Android tablets.
