Thelma forgot her child in a shop: ‘Suddenly I heard: ‘Madam, your baby!’

Every month a mother tells about the moment in motherhood when things went horribly wrong.

Thelma (30), married to Hans (37), mother of Oscar (1).

“The first weeks after Oscar’s delivery, I really didn’t think about sex. Taking care of the baby swallowed me up and it was new and uncomfortable for Hans too. Every night we fell asleep next to each other, exhausted.

Oscar was a month old when it hit me: would I now only be a mother-mother and never care about sex again? I was too young for that, and besides, we were too early together. I am Swedish by origin and met Hans on the first day of my holiday in the Netherlands. Six months later I found out I was pregnant.

Take matters into your own hands

I decided to take matters into my own hands. To get in the mood, I went to a men’s underwear store to buy Hans a super soft Italian pair of knickers. With Oscar in the car, I looked at the collection at my leisure and asked a saleswoman for help. Together we found a sexy silk slip.

To forget

When I had paid for it and had already left the store for a while, I heard screams behind me. The nice saleswoman had already run after me for a few blocks, panting and screaming: ‘Ma’am, your baby, your baby!’ Only then did I realize I had left Oscar behind. It may have been a few minutes, but I was able to sink through the ground. With a blush on my cheeks, I took over the pram with my child again. No idea if the saleswoman was judging me – she didn’t show anything. Oscar slept like a log.

Only a few weeks later did I dare to tell Hans, when I gave him those underpants. Fortunately, he could laugh about it, but afterwards I regularly wondered if I was suitable as a mother.”
