Theft of e-bikes in the elevator
In 2 years, the theft of e-bikes has increased by more than 75%. More than 22,500 owners filed a report.
Bicycle thieves have discovered the e-bike! Less and less regular bicycles are being stolen, but e-bikes are increasingly attracting the attention of the thieves’ guild. And it is not made difficult for them either, because many owners only use one lock, according to research by the RAI Association and the independent ART Keurmerk.
The police, RAI and ART advise to use two locks and to always secure your valuable e-bike to a fence, standard or other fixed object. In addition, it is advised to use a good lock with at least 2 stars.
The ART quality mark ensures that locks are tested and assessed for quality. A properly made lock acts as a delay mechanism. The more difficult a lock is to open, the greater the chance that a thief will leave your bicycle untouched. The number of stars a slot gets says something about its quality. For e-bikes, the quality mark therefore recommends 2 or 3 stars for the first lock, a second lock may be of lower quality. Finally, 4 to 5 stars are recommended for motorcycles.
To be able to claim your insurance in the event of theft, a good lock is also necessary. Many insurers often require a minimum of 2 stars, something that unfortunately few owners realize. When purchasing your new e-bike, pay close attention to whether the locks have the required quality that the insurer requires.
