The very first PlayStation 5: The Sony console looked so unusual at first

The PlayStation 5 will be two years old in November. However, even before the final design of the console was finalized, there were early versions of the console that Sony made available to game developers. One of these PS5 prototypes has now fallen into the hands of a tech YouTuber.

Early version of the PlayStation looked very different

That PlayStation 5 design has been hotly debated since it was unveiled in 2020. Is it cool and futuristic, or is it more of an oversized WiFi router? Tech YouTuber Macho Nacho Productions now reveals that the PS5 used to look very different.

On his channel he presents a so-called PlayStation 5 Dev Kit. These prototypes were given to developers by Sony so that they could adapt their games to the new console. Accordingly, the appearance of the dev kit is actually secondary. Nevertheless, Sony has obviously made an effort to make the prototype look interesting. The ventilation slots are almost reminiscent of the drive of a spaceship.

Even before the release of the PS5, there are some Pictures of such dev kits have been circulating on the internet. Even then, the design of the consoles raised some questions. However, the video by Macho Nacho Productions is one of the few examples where there is an actual example of the prototype.

The PlayStation 5 will soon also get a new controller. Check out the trailer here:

Sony is very cautious about the secrets of the PS5

Macho Nacho Productions explains in its video that its Dev Kit never used for game development or just started. However, he cannot go into detail as to where he actually got the prototype from. Sony won’t be happy with the device’s public appearance. A drive was also visible in images from other dev kits. However, it is completely absent here. This also prevents the YouTuber from trying out what would happen if he puts a game into the prototype.

Unfortunately, even after launch, the prototype doesn’t reveal any secrets. Sony requires that all dev kits be registered online. According to Macho Nacho Productions, his early PS5 is now little more than a interesting looking paperweight.
