The next iPhone update fulfills the wishes of many smartwatch users

At Apple, evolution does not stand still and so developers have been able to get new beta versions of the operating systems for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and tvOS with lots of new functions for several hours. One feature fulfills a great wish these days.

Only last week Apple released with iOS 14.4 the last major update of iOS 14 for the iPhone, now the beta 1 of iOS 14.5 followed. Similarly, Apple also distributes pre-release versions of watchOS 7.4, iPadOS 14.5 and tvOS 14.5. In contrast to the previous updates, there are again more new functions, a feature has been wanted for a long time and is now finally becoming a reality for Apple Watch owners.

With iOS 14.5 it’s finally possible: Unlock iPhone with Apple Watch

It’s been a long time with the Mac. On request, we can automatically unlock our Mac with Apple’s Smartwatch – a damn practical feature that the author of these lines was enthusiastic about at the time. With iOS 14.5, this now also works with the iPhone. Really awesome, especially in times when we all still wear masks. In this case there was a trick to still be able to use Face ID, but it wasn’t really reliable. The option of unlocking the iPhone with the Apple Watch is better. For this to work, watchOS 7.4 must also be installed on the Apple Watch. Important to know: With this method, the iPhone alone can be unlocked by bypassing Face ID, Apple Pay payments or purchases in the App Store still have to be authorized via face recognition.

New functions in iOS 14.5 and iPadOS 14.5

But the new features of iOS 14.5 don’t end there. Below we summarize the most important new functions that have been discovered so far. In the next few weeks, reports will certainly increase, Apple usually adds further functions in the following developer versions. But first to the current features – a selection:

  • 5G in dual SIM mode: So far, the operation of two SIMs in the iPhone 12 was limited to pure LTE connections, with iOS 14.5 Apple has corrected this critical limitation and allows full 5G connectivity with both SIMs
  • More game controllers: From now on, the new game controllers of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X can also be used with iOS 14.5 and iPadOS 14.5. Not yet confirmed, but most likely this also applies to the Apple TV with tvOS 14.5.
  • Emergency calls can now be canceled directly via “Hey Siri”, but this should then also work with earlier iOS versions, so it does not have to be an exclusive feature.
  • More transparency in app tracking: From now on, developers must obtain and obtain permission from the user to access their random advertising identifier, which is used to track activity across apps and websites.
  • The iPad shows a under iPadOS 14.5 horizontal loading screen with the correspondingly aligned Apple logo when the iPad is in landscape format – as with the Mac.

You can already do this without an update if you know how:

As always, it is currently not known when the development work on the new systems will be completed. GIGA suspects: Let’s reckon with at least a good month, rather a little more. In this respect, we do not expect a publication until March at the earliest. If you don’t want to wait that long, Apple will soon be given the option to install the public beta again.
