Externally, the Dutch are sticking to the well-known design of the predecessors, at least with the VanMoof S5. The S5 is billed as “a refresh of the distinctive VanMoof straight frame with slightly smaller wheels.” The VanMoof A5, on the other hand, is completely newwhich should make it easier for cyclists to get on with its angled frame.

Both e-bikes have these in common Halo rings fitted to the ends of the handlebars (see video below). Speed, battery level and connection are displayed there. The former no longer in km/h, but only graphically processed, similar to the network reception on a mobile phone. According to VanMoof, this should primarily benefit newcomers to e-bikes. The two bikes no longer have a matrix display in the frame.

If you want to see more information, you can also use your smartphone as a dashboard. This is made possible by an optionally available mobile phone case and the new USB-C connection.

The gear shift has also been revised. It now includes three instead of four gears and a newly developed torque sensor. All in all, VanMoof S5 and A5 should now switch much more gently and smoothly than their predecessors, VanMoof promises. VanMoof has also worked on the Turbo Boost. Among other things, it should be more reactive and push softer. Also new is the motor, which, according to VanMoof, was developed in-house for the first time.

VanMoof continues to rely on a permanently installed battery. the On the new generation of e-bikes, however, the charging connection is no longer located under the center tube, but just above the rear wheel. The manufacturer wants to make charging easier with this. An optional click-on battery is also available for long journeys. In contrast to the well-known power bank, it is directly connected to the motor. In the future, VanMoof drivers will no longer have to wait for the power bank to charge the integrated battery, but can start driving immediately. There are also detail improvements on the grips, the rear light, the internal wiring and the kicklock.

Starting today, April 5th, the VanMoof S5 and A5 are available. The introductory price is around 2,500 euros. This makes the e-bikes a little more expensive than their predecessors. In view of the current crises and the interrupted supply chains, the price increase of around 150 euros is surprisingly moderate. The bikes, which are only available in grey, are to be delivered in July 2022.
