the newest addition to the Razr family

The Motorola Razr 2022 is already the third folding smartphone from Motorola. The design has been significantly overhauled and the device, unlike its predecessors, has high-end specifications. You can read in our review whether the Motorola Razr 2022 managed to convince us.

Motorola Razr 2022 review

We have of course known the brand name Razr for much longer. The first phone in the successful Razr line was released in 2003 under the name Razr V3. Many versions, models and years later, we have therefore arrived at the Razr 2022. We have tested extensively for you whether the Razr can continue its success and whether the device can keep up with the competition.

Sales package

The Motorola Razr 2022 comes in a fairly large, luxurious rectangular box that, how could it be otherwise, folds open. When you have opened the lid, you immediately see the phone. Under the phone are the 30 Watt fast charger, a USB-C cable, and some booklets. A case is also included.

Design and interface

The design of the Motorola Razr 2022 has been overhauled compared to its predecessors, the first and second generation Razr smartphones. Its predecessors had a chin, into which the top of the device fell, so to speak. This is no longer the case with the Motorola Razr 2022, here the top and bottom connect to each other when the device is closed. Just as is the case with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4. However, the Motorola Razr 2022 is a lot bigger than the Flip 4, read the review here.

When the device is closed, we find the outer display at the top. This display is an AMOLED screen and is 2.7 inches in size. Below is the camera module containing two lenses. When we open the device, we see the 6.7-inch screen with a cutout in the middle for the selfie camera. This screen is also of the AMOLED type and has a Full-HD+ resolution.

The right side offers space for the on and off button and the volume buttons. All three buttons are placed on the top half, so that they are also easy to operate when the device is closed. At the bottom we find the USB-C connection with one of the two stereo speakers next to it. The second is placed at the top of the screen. The speakers are of very good quality.

Interface

As we are used to from Motorola, devices from the manufacturer come with a fairly bare Android version with a number of extra useful functions from Motorola itself, which we find very pleasant to use at DroidApp. For example, the Moto app has been added again with which you can personalize the device and set gestures. Under settings we find the option “Quick View display”. With this option you can customize the small display to your own taste, such as the style of the clock and which apps and functions are shown on the small display, or external display as Motorola calls this screen.

Communication: calling, internet and networking

It will not surprise you that calling with the Motorola Razr 2022 is fine. Calling and sending messages is done with the standard Google apps. The device also supports dual SIM functionality. You can store one physical SIM in the device and an eSIM. The quality of the sound during calls is also fine, we have not been able to detect any disturbing noises or the like.

Like other high-end devices, surfing the internet with the Razr 2022 is also excellent thanks to 5G and WiFi. The device also has Bluetooth, NFC and GPS.

Multimedia: music and film

The screen is great for watching movies. The crease in the middle of the screen is barely visible and less prominent than on Samsung’s Flip 4. The screen is easy to read on sunny days and can also be dimmed sufficiently in the dark. However, we noticed that the automatic brightness did not always work well in the dark, the brightness was often on the high side for no reason.

The sound of the speakers is very good. The volume can be nice and loud, without compromising the quality. Of course you can also listen to music via your headset, provided it has Bluetooth. A 3.5 millimeter connection is missing.

Camera: photo and video

As we have already indicated, the Motorola Razr 2022 has two cameras on the back of the device and one on the front. The two cameras on the back have a 50-megapixel main lens and a 13-megapixel wide-angle lens. The camera app is clear and all settings are easy to find and can be set quickly. You can open this app by twisting your wrist twice or double-clicking the power button. Very handy.

Of course, the most important thing is the quality of the photos. The main camera shoots beautiful photos. Under all circumstances the photos show beautiful colors and many details. The wide-angle lens performs slightly less. Colors are often exaggerated. For example, the sky is bluer than in reality and therefore also in the photos taken with the main lens. However, this is not very disturbing.

With the main camera it is possible to zoom in up to eight times. Although the quality is deteriorating, the photos are still quite reasonable. Photos taken in poor lighting are also fine. Of course we see some noise in these photos, but colors and details are more than enough. You can find all the photos we took with the Razr 2022 in the online photo album.

Selfies and video camera

The selfie camera has a 32-megapixel lens. The quality of the photos taken with the selfie camera is just like its big brother on the back of the device.
With the video camera you can make videos in 8K (30 frames per second), 4K (30 or 60 fps) or in Full HD (30, 60 or 120 fps). Images shot with the video camera are fine.

Performance: battery, speed and memory

The Razr 2022 has Snapdragon’s new processor, namely the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. Together with the 8GB RAM, this makes the device lightning fast, so we have not seen any stutter or anything of that nature. There is no shortage of storage memory, Motorola has equipped the device with 265GB memory.

The battery is somewhat smaller than we are used to with smartphones nowadays, namely 3500 mAh. The reason for this should be clear, because of the hinge in the middle of the device, it is not possible to place a larger battery. Although the Razr 2022 uses the battery sparingly, you won’t have a charge left at the end of the day with intensive use. We achieved a screen-on time of 3.5 hours. You may need to recharge when you have a long day. This is possible with the 30 Watt supplied fast charger.

Update Policy

The Razr 2022 still runs on Android 12 and we think that’s a shame. After all, Android 13 has been out for a while, but will come to this device later. Motorola has also promised an update to Android 14 and 3 years of security updates. Best at least for a device of 1200 euros.

Rating

We are generally very positive about the Motorola Razr 2022. The device is slightly more expensive than its major competitor, the Flip 4 from Samsung, but also comes with more storage memory. The device should have received Android 13 from the box. Furthermore, the device actually has few drawbacks and can compete with Samsung’s folding phone.

The Motorola Razr 2022 is available at Bol.com, Belsimpel and Coolblue.
