The size of Call of Duty in terms of how much disk space the game takes up has been joking inappropriately for several years. But while for someone it remains funny that the last episodes have easily exceeded the mythical limit of 100 GB – especially if you wanted to have a complete package in the form of a campaign, classic multiplayer and battle royale mode Warzone – for other players it can be considerable problem. Also, given that the new generation of consoles does not offer much space compared to the generally growing size of games, Activision has stepped on the brake pedal and promises in a short statement on social networks that it will solve this persistent problem with the arrival of Call of Duty: Vanguard. The developers promise that the game will take up up to 50 percent less disk space than in previous years, and the solution should not be any intervention in the quality of graphics or sound, but the deployment of a new system for streaming textures.

“We have good news for your hard drives – the size of the Vanguard installation will be significantly smaller than in previous parts of Call of Duty,” reads the beginning of a short statement that mentions the texture streaming system in the second sentence. Thanks to it, the size will be 30-50 percent smaller, on new generation consoles and computers. The developers do not add further explanations, including details about the size of those who will play Call of Duty: Vanguard on the Xbox One and PlayStation 3, completely in darkness but we do not stay. Because Activision uses the term “on-demand texture streaming,” it is relatively easy to conclude that Vanguard will simply use a system that already works in Warzone.

Yes, the just mentioned streaming – ie loading better quality textures from the Internet to places that are currently in permanent possession – is already used by the battle royale branch of Call of Duty on the PC and, from the 5th season, also on consoles. The system has been described in some detail and there is no reason to think that developers will come up with something completely new for Vanguard’s needs. Therefore, following the example of previous years, the installer can be expected to download a separate package with HD textures – which is one of the reasons why Call of Duty takes up so much space – and if you do not download it, you will be able to use the texture streaming switch in the menu. to achieve higher quality. In this case, the relevant data will be downloaded and deleted again if you stop playing Call of Duty. But here comes a possible catch and the condition to free up some extra space anyway, where the necessary data could be stored for use during your game session.

Currently, it is necessary to have 24 GB of data reserved on the consoles in order to use this function in Warzone, so as a result it will probably have some reserve even when playing Vanguard. Not big enough to fit an entire package with HD textures, but no doubt one, because just like that in the air the downloaded textures will not be saved. The question therefore remains whether Activision doesn’t play with words a bit and may only hide the amount of data needed to run the game in the basic settings under the “installation size”. But we don’t want to sound like an unnecessary critic of the effort to save some space – after all, the very modularity and the ability to free up a lot of space after completing a campaign, for example, is definitely a welcome approach and we would only like developers to continue similar optimization efforts.
