The national government invests 780 million euros in cycling infrastructure throughout the Netherlands!

Vivianne Heijnen – State Secretary for Infrastructure and Water Management – ​​and Mark Harbers – Minister for Infrastructure and Water Management – ​​announced that the national government will invest 780 million euros in cycling infrastructure throughout the Netherlands. What are the plans with this budget? New bicycle parking facilities at public transport hubs, extra cycle routes and extra tunnels and bridges for cyclists and pedestrians.

Invest in bicycles

In addition to the investment from the national government, municipalities and provinces also participate in paying for the bicycle measures. In total, the budget will therefore be even larger: more than 1.1 billion euros. An example of one of the investments that will be made is the new bicycle shed at the Utrecht and Goes train stations. A total of 3.5 thousand places will be added to this.

The government is therefore investing heavily in bicycles. For example, the State Secretary calls on employers to make cycling to work more attractive. This can be done by always giving the travel costs of 19 cents per kilometer. Even when an employee comes to work by bicycle and therefore does not incur any petrol costs.
