Apple announces new iPad Air 5 on March 8

Are you now sitting on the couch with a Stone Age iPad and have you been waiting for a good upgrade for a while? A new iPad Air is coming! Apple will most likely announce this at the ‘Peek performance’ event, which will take place on March 8. The tablet will have a recognizable design, but a number of significant new features. In this article you can read what we know about the iPad Air 5. Or will it be the iPad Air 2022?

1. Same housing as its predecessor

The iPad Air 5 will reportedly get the same aluminum housing as the current iPad Air. That means the device will have flat, angular sides. The Liquid Retina screen also remains the same, with a size of 10.9 inches. Are you hoping for a groundbreaking new design? You will have to be patient for that a little longer.

However, the iPad Air 2022 will probably come on the market in a number of new colors. The current iPad Air is available in space gray, silver, rose gold, green and blue. It is not yet known which colors the iPad Air 5 will get. Of course, it’s always possible that Apple has even more secrets in store for us.

2. iPhone 13 . A15 chip

The speed of Apple’s new tablet is fine. The iPad Air 5 gets an A15 chip under the hood. This is of course less powerful than the M1 chip of the iPad Pro – but that should not spoil the fun. The A15 races through all games, internet pages and apps. It is one of the fastest mobile chips currently being made.

The current iPad Air runs on an A14 chip, which can also be found in the iPhone 12. This chip is already incredibly fast and we don’t think there are many people who experience this tablet as slow. A speedboost however, is always welcome. The faster the better.

3. 5G Support

Apple announced the 6th generation of the iPad mini in September 2021. The tablet is actually a shrunken version of the current iPad Air in all respects – except for a number of small points. For example, the iPad mini has 5G support, but the iPad Air does not. That’s about to change with the iPad Air 5. In combination with a subscription, the tablet can connect to the 5G network.

Although 5G in the Netherlands is not as fast as, for example, in America, the network also delivers considerably faster performance than the outdated 4G. Everything is going a bit smoother with 5G internet.

4. Better Selfie Camera with Center Stage

With the arrival of the iPad Pro 2021, Apple announced a new feature for video calling, called Center Stage. With Center Stage – in Dutch the function is called ‘Middelpunt’ – the selfie camera follows the caller. As a result, it is always in the center of the image. The iPad Air 2022 will also receive this handy function. This makes video calling a bit more immersive.
