The Germans have a clear winner

Combustion engines are dying out, the future is the electric car. At least that’s what large parts of politics want. The technological change should benefit the battered environment. But what about today? The ADAC has done the reality check and reveals who will win the battle between petrol and diesel cars against electric cars.

The future should belong to electric cars, by 2035 at the latest German industry must take the big step. But does it really take that long? E-cars are already said to have the edge. This is the result of a study by ADAC SE.

ADAC survey: Half of Germans want to drive electrically

“According to our survey, the number of private e-cars in Germany has doubled since the beginning of 2021. The reasons given for e-cars are primarily ecological aspects, lower running costs as well as tax breaks and grants”explains Sascha Coccorullo, Head of Strategy, New Business and Research at ADAC SE.

Currently, the stock is still clearly distributed: 91 percent of private cars are combustion engines, six percent are hybrids and only three percent are purely electric. However, the plans of German motorists reveal how quickly this can change: in the next three years 25 percent of those surveyed switched to electric drive. Another 28 percent favor a hybrid solution.

If they go through with their plans, they should in the next three years more than half of private new registrations are at least partially electric. There are also customers who already drive e-cars. A return to petrol or diesel is only an option for 4 percent, and 13 percent can imagine a hybrid for the future. 83 percent want to remain loyal to their Stromer.

With 68 percent (combustion engine) to 69 percent (e-cars), there is hardly any difference in use: e-cars are just as suitable as first vehicles as combustion engines. According to the ADAC, 2,300 people aged 18 and over took part in the representative online survey.

However, the results of the ADAC study do not include important factors: Hybrids will no longer be subsidized from 2023. There is less money for purely electric cars and as soon as the funding is used up, there is nothing left. Car pope Ferdinand Dudenhöffer sees this as a great threat to the success of e-cars. The consumer climate has also deteriorated significantly since the survey in March 2022. Whether a car purchase is still planned at all is now another matter.
