The future is here: Microsoft takes first step towards a password-free future

Microsoft

Microsoft is taking the first step towards password-free login. You can read here how they do that and whether it really helped you.

Everyone will lose their password at some point. There are several useful apps for this, with which you can already save passwords. The purpose of this is that you will never lose them again. Still, not many people use it. For years, passwords have been the primary layer of security for everything in our digital lives — from email to bank accounts to video games.

Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at Microsoft says, “Hackers don’t break in, they log in.” And he has a point there.

Microsoft and the password-free future

Nowadays, when you create a password, it must meet all kinds of requirements. It must be unique, be long enough, contain different characters and so on. Then you have to remember them all and change them every now and then. Misery everywhere. Microsoft shares that opinion and has therefore conducted research into this. In a recent Microsoft Twitter survey, one in five people reported that they would rather not set a new password. Too much hassle. So the company got to work.

For years, the company has been saying that a password will no longer be necessary in the future. That’s why they came out with an announcement this week to announce the next step in that vision. In March 2021, Microsoft announced that no password login will be generally available to commercial users, making the feature available to business organizations around the world. But now you can do it too.

You can now remove the password from your Microsoft account. Use the Microsoft Authenticator app, Windows Hello, a security key or verification code sent to your phone or email to sign in to your favorite apps and services, such as Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft OneDrive, Microsoft Family Safety, and more. This feature will be rolled out in the coming weeks.

Handy, or will you just keep using your ‘good old’ password?
