The Frost: scary AI movie makes tongues loose

Every frame of this movie is AI generated. In twelve minutes, The Frost succeeds in maintaining the tension.

AI studio Waymark has succeeded in putting together a reasonably realistic B-movie with the help of an AI. The short film “The Frost”. The film begins somewhere in Antarctica, where a group of survivors is looking for a mysterious signal. Little by little the veil is being lifted. The storyline is not really very challenging, but this film is mainly about the animations that are made frame by frame by people in combination with an artificial intelligence, entirely based on prompts.

Technique used for The Frost

The makers have lifted a corner of the veil on how they brought The Frost to life. They used Dall-E 2, although not as good in terms of graphic quality as Midjourney, for example, but that is compensated by the greater user-friendliness. Frame by frame, they generated images with prompts.

Of course, the collection of still images was not yet a film. For that they used another AI, D-ID. It can convert still images into motion. This resulted in a coherent film: The Frost. You can see how they did it in the clip below.

Of course it’s best to pay attention to what the AI can’t do. Errors in the representation of the globe, or faltering animations and wooden figures. This makes it clear that Ai is not yet able to direct a film completely independently. The AI also fails in terms of special effects and realism. Still, connoisseurs call The Frost a breakthrough.

Does intelligence arise automatically?

But remember that an AI knows absolutely nothing about the universe we live in. And only uses an algorithm and a lot of data in which the AI recognizes patterns. Then the performance becomes a lot more impressive. And even though they were humans who managed to piece together every scene of The Frost into a movie, most of the work was done by the Ai.

Do androids dream of electric sheep? Perhaps, and intelligence is an emergent behavior.
