The Fairphone 4 is so easy to repair (+video)

The Fairphone 4 is the new device from the Dutch manufacturer Fairphone. The device is a durable and honest smartphone that you can disassemble yourself and thus easily repair. And the great thing is, even a man with two left handy hands can do it!

Fair trade smartphone

Fairphone is doing as much as possible to bring a kind of ‘fair trade smartphone’ to the market. With fair trade, raw materials and employees who are treated and paid well. An important part of Fairphone’s pursuit is the lifespan of your smartphone. Fairphone has therefore designed the Fairphone 4 to last as long as possible. The longer you use your smartphone, the smaller the ecological footprint and the less waste of, for example, smartphone parts and raw materials.

The company does this on the one hand by offering a five-year warranty and five years of security updates, and on the other it does this by making the Fairphone 4 repairable. No part of the device is glued, which makes it easy to replace parts. The main camera, selfie camera, speaker and display, among other things, can easily be removed with a screwdriver.

If, for example, the camera of your device is broken, you do not immediately have to buy a new smartphone. You can then buy a new camera module for 79.95 and replace it yourself for your broken camera. This also contributes to a green footprint.

How easy is easy?

To replace parts of the smartphone, you must first remove the back of the smartphone. And this alone is truly a wonderful thing to do. The nostalgic feeling of putting your nails between the back and removing them in one go is really wonderful. The crackling sound that comes with this also gives you a satisfying sensation.

When you have done this you can remove the different parts with a screwdriver. With a little dexterity you can do this in about five minutes. If you’re a little clumsy, you’ll probably do double that. Once you have removed a part, it (or a new one) must of course also be put back in. And this is also quite easy. Just fit and measure well, and you screw the part back into the device.
