The biggest tech disappointment of 2022 according to the Androidworld editors

We ended the year 2022 at Androidworld in style with top lists of the best smartphones and wearables in various categories. But in addition to these highs, there were also tech lows in 2022. In this article, we look at the biggest disappointments of 2022.

The security and the way Eufy cameras handle user privacy has been the biggest disappointment of 2022 for me. And in fact it’s mainly the company’s miscommunication about the incidents that has made things even worse. Eufy has always stated that footage your cameras capture never leaves your local storage. That’s why the cameras come with a HomeBase and it makes them attractive to users who value privacy.

It is therefore extra painful that these promises are not fulfilled by Eufy. Eufy continues to deny some of his mistakes and that doesn’t inspire confidence. The whole concept of Eufy seemed so well thought out and it really appealed to a certain group of users. Hence – for the Star Wars fans among us – I am left with a “You were the chosen one” feeling.

Honorable Mention

Honorable Mention: LastPass has suffered two cyber-attacks this year. It took the company almost half a year before it could report that users’ passwords had indeed been stolen.

My biggest disappointment is the metaverse. I understand that Meta wants to fully develop its own metaverse in the coming years and that Horizon is only its first steps in this field, but it all seems so clumsy. The fact that thousands of people are also being laid off and investments have gone down does not help. The metaverse is already a rather far-from-their-bed show for many people, let alone if they also hear negative stories. Unfortunately, my disappointment mainly lies in Meta’s enthusiasm to tell you about it already: they simply shouldn’t have done that. Make sure it works well first, instead of delivering half something that even turns out the developers don’t even use it.

Foldables, foldables and more foldables, I expected more from them in 2022. You also notice that Samsung – the manufacturer that sells by far the most foldable smartphones – needs more of a challenge. The monopoly that Samsung now seems to have somewhat ensures that the manufacturer is not yet forced to adjust things, and you noticed that with their devices this year. The Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 only brought minor upgrades and built on previous designs. This while I wish Samsung had enlarged the screen on the back – or front when closed – on the Z Flip 4. The manufacturer may also finally adjust the aspect ratio of the Z Fold that is far too long in my opinion.

The development of foldable smartphones can accelerate if several manufacturers launch foldables on the market. And these devices will be released in several countries, of course. OPPO did come up with new devices in the last weeks of this year. However, the Find N2 – with its delicious size – will not be released worldwide. In addition, Xiaomi has also shown with the Mix Fold 2 this year that a foldable smartphone can be made a lot thinner. However, we could not see this device here either. We are therefore still waiting for the worldwide release of these devices.

We hope that at least several foldable smartphones will come onto the market in 2023. In any case, Google seems to be launching a foldable next year. I’m curious whether the expectation we had of foldables – ‘the smartphone revolution’ – will come true.

Honorable Mention

An honorable mention goes further to the NFTs. At the end of this year, it emerged that NFT trading has collapsed. The somewhat nonsensical digital statement that a digital file belongs to you soon appears to have found its digital Waterloo. Perhaps the cryptocurrency will follow soon, if only because of the gigantic energy consumption.

My biggest disappointment of 2022 has to be Google’s decision to discontinue Stadia, its game streaming service. Stadia was launched in 2019 with great expectations, but still attracted fewer gamers. There were also many complaints about the performance of the platform and major titles were not forthcoming. It was an accumulation of complaints and problems that ensured that a new place in the Google Graveyard was taken in 2022, namely Google Stadia. I still believe in cloud gaming, without consoles and expensive hardware, but Google has shown with Stadia that even a large tech company cannot simply make such a service successful.

Honorable Mention

Possible honorable mention: Elon Musk taking over Twitter and then making a mess of it. I left for Mastodon.
