But how much is that necessary? With a subscription to a streaming service you have the entire range in one overview, on your own TV, PC or telephone and which chair is more comfortable than your own easy chair? The only drawback is that you have to clean up your own popcorn, but otherwise you can receive quite nice movies on your streaming service(s).
car movies
Overviews and news regarding films can be found on this website, but we have tracked down a number of nice car films via the most popular streaming services: Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+. You may have already seen some of them – the ‘obvious choices’ are included, as well as a few misfits and fun movies for your kid, or the kid in you. Without extra craziness, the choices.
The entire Fast and Furious series (Netflix/Prime)
What once started as action car movies is now an action movie with cars. You won’t really find two street racing boys in heavily modified Japanese cars anymore, but for simple entertainment the Fast and Furious films are great fun. Part 9 will be out soon, probably in theaters first, but parts one through eight are all on both Netflix and Amazon. So you can have a good time with that. Leading roles are played by Vin Diesel, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and in the earlier parts Paul Walker.
Ford vs Ferrari (Prime)
There are plenty of races that actually happened, with enough material for an action movie. One of those races is Le Mans in 1966. A special action film about it was released in 2019, with Matt Damon as Carroll Shelby in their adventure to beat the big name Ferrari as an underdog. Yours truly heard from a non-car buff that even he enjoyed the movie, so as far as car movies go you can watch it even if you don’t know anything about it. Ford vs Ferrari is on Amazon Prime.
Rush (Prime)
A 1970s Formula 1 titanic battle, made into a film similar to Ford vs Ferrari. It is about the then world stars in F1 Niki Lauda and James Hunt and their rivalry. Daniel Brühl has taken on the role of Lauda, while Avengers fame Chris Hemsworth has played James Hunt. Based on a real story. You can also look in this case on Amazon Prime.
Italian Job (Netflix)
One from the ‘old but gold’ category. Chances are you’ve already seen this one, but if you want to see the brilliant Italian gold robbery with Mini Coopers as getaway cars again, you can do so on Netflix. Whether it fits into the category of ‘car films’ is debatable, it is there because the Mini Coopers have become synonymous with this film. By the way, it concerns the remake from 2003 with, among others, Mark Wahlberg and Charlize Theron. According to some, not as good as the original, but you have to pay extra for that on Prime Video.
Fangio (Netflix)
Okay, this is more documentary than feature film, but when it comes to an hour and a half of beautiful images and a story, Fangio is definitely worth it. It is of course about Juan Manuel Fangio, one of the first world stars in Formula 1 who was mentioned by greats such as Ayrton Senna as the greatest hero of the sport of all time. An insight into Formula 1 in its first days and the story of Fangio. To be seen on Netflix.
OVERDRIVE (Netflix)
Many car movies are based on Fast and Furious, or at least similar. So is OVERDRIVE. Two enthusiasts who earn their money by stealing cars are caught by a top criminal. In exchange for freedom, they must help him with the greatest heist of all time: stealing a Ferrari 250 GTO. They assemble a crew to carry out this heist. A nice standard story, but enough action with cars to entertain yourself for part of the day. Available on Netflix.
Asphalt Burning (Netflix)
A Norwegian film seen as ‘Norwegian Fast and Furious’. Do you also spot a trend? Nevertheless, it is nice that the action also takes place in familiar places, not least the Nürburgring. A bit of an outsider, but for simple action and well-known circuits and places in Europe it is a nice film, which you can watch on Netflix.
All parts of Cars (Disney+)
Okay, these are the ones your kids will love the most, but when it comes to car movies, you can’t ignore the movie literally called “Cars.” Pixar has a long timeline with everything they have given a face, in this case a world made up of cars. If you’re a car fan, however, it’s a brilliant film with lots of references to famous racing drivers and other car scenes. In case your kids (or you, we don’t judge) want more: there’s also a part 2 and 3. Even if the original remains the one that the petrolheads who grew up with Cars have the best memories of. Available on Disney+.
All parts of Herbie (Disney+)
The latter dangles a bit between adult and children’s film. Herbie: Fully Loaded (the first part) follows the story of a Volkswagen Beetle that is alive. He is taken over in a ill-fated state by a girl (played by Lindsey Lohan) and turns out to be able to perform miracles magically. And yes, it ends with this Beetle taking on NASCAR cars on an oval. There are more parts to the movie, by the way. You just have to see if you don’t find it too childish, or else your kids will have something fun to watch on Disney+.
