That’s the mother of all recalls

When car manufacturers recall models, all customers initially prick up their ears. It could affect you. Often, however, many customers can quickly calm down again, it is a different model, a different year of manufacture. Things are different at Ferrari now. The sports car icon has to launch the mother of all recall campaigns.

A recall is an annoying but necessary obligation for every manufacturer. If products sold do not meet the necessary standards or are even defective, improvements must be made. Usually it only affects individual batches, production lines or even car models.

Ferrari has had to recall almost all sports cars sold since 2005

But Ferrari is coming now one of the most comprehensive recall campaigns rolling that the automotive world has seen so far: Almost all luxury sports cars sold since 2005 of the Italians must be brought back to the workshops. The reason for the comprehensive recall is possibly defective cap of the brake fluid reservoir. In the case of the Ferraris, it not only closes the container, but can also release excess pressure if necessary. However, something seems to be going wrong here.

If the flap is defective, it can generate a vacuum and thus lead to a loss of brake fluid. Without them, the brakes stop working – a no go for all car manufacturers, but a particularly bitter disgrace for high-performance sports cars.

The cap is also used in practically all models by the Italians. According to Ars Technica at Ferrari, it is assumed that only about 1 percent of the vehicles actually have this error. To be sure, however, all must be checked. The only exceptions are the 575 M Maranello, 599 GTB and SF90 models and the 296 plug-in hybrid. Ferrari wants to inform affected customers directly.

If a defect is found, it is said, the closure flap is replaced. There is also a software update to inform drivers in the future about the level of the brake fluid. In the US, 23,555 sports cars are said to be affected. Overall, Ferrari alone in the 10 years between 2011 and 2021 92,567 of its sports cars sold (Source: extra).
