That’s how much money the Germans spend on vacation

The restrictions during the corona pandemic have increased the need to travel for many. But how does vacation planning look like this year and how much money do Germans spend on average on their vacation?

The corona pandemic has not only fundamentally changed the everyday life of many people. Travel behavior has also adapted during the years of the pandemic.

In the meantime, a lot has returned to normal when it comes to travel and vacations. But the travel behavior of Germans has changed permanently, that has the ADAC tourism study 2023 result.

What has changed as a result of the corona pandemic?

In 2022, the travel activity of Germans will have almost reached the level before the corona pandemic. In 2019, 73 percent of those surveyed took at least one vacation trip, by 2022 it was already 68 percent. In the two pandemic years 2020 and 2021, however, the numbers were 51 and 61 percent respectively.

The satisfaction of vacationers also suffered during the Corona phase. Because the proportion of travelers who were very satisfied with their vacation fell sharply during the pandemic years. In 2022 the number was still 61 percent, two years later it was only 49 percent.

How are Germans planning their holidays in 2023?

Long-term travel planning is now possible again after years of uncertain pandemic conditions. And according to the ADAC tourism study, the Germans take advantage of that. Because for 63 percent of Germans in 2022 it was very likely that they would go on vacation in 2023. In 2020, this forecast was only 45 percent of those willing to travel.

But the travel destinations have also changed. Because Germany is still more interesting as a travel destination for many. While in 2019 35 percent of those surveyed stated that they had spent their main vacation in Germany, in 2020 it was 56 percent. And in 2022, too, the number has leveled off at 45 percent, higher than before the pandemic.

However, trips to other European countries or outside of Europe are still below the level before the pandemic. In 2019, 51 percent of those surveyed spent their main vacation in other European countries. In 2022 it was 43 percent, after 38 percent in 2020.

Outside of Europe, around 14 percent of travelers were on their main vacation in 2019. The number fell to 5 percent during the pandemic but climbed back to 12 percent in 2022.

How much money do Germans spend on their holidays?

But what are the consequences of inflation and the energy crisis on German travel plans? In 2021, 14 percent of Germans still expected to have a lower holiday budget in 2022, but in the following year it was a whole 24 percent.

The financial restrictions mainly affect quality and comfort. But the travel time can also be affected. About a third of those affected even expect to have to forego travel or vacation at home.

But how much do Germans spend on their trips? The bank Revolut in a survey for their Travel Trend Report determined. Accordingly, 28 percent of travelers expect 500 to 1,000 euros per week and person. For 7.5 percent of those surveyed, this amount is more than 2,000 euros per week.

But it also plays a role where the respondents come from. Because people in North Rhine-Westphalia, for example, spend ten percent of the people less than 250 euros per week on vacation. In Berlin, on the other hand, 3.5 percent of those surveyed stated that they were willing to pay more than 5,000 euros per week.
