“That holiday I put an end to our friendship on the spot”

Floating on the sea you can just make a decision that turns your whole life upside down.

Doreen (35), two sons, was on vacation with her best friend.

“Zelda and I were inseparable. Our kids thought they were family and there wasn’t a day when we didn’t talk. When Zelda’s mother died, I kept her family afloat. And when my husband left me, she took time off from work to help me with my new home.

‘I have to tell you something’

Until that one evening, now over a year ago. My sons were with their father, her husband was at home with the children. I had been settled in my new life for several months and most of the tears had been shed. Loose lipped by the alcohol, Zelda said, “I have to tell you something, Doreen: I slept with your ex a few times.”

I burst out laughing in fright. This had to be a joke. It happened right after my divorce, she said. When she drove home in the evening, she sometimes went for a glass of wine with him. Because he seemed so lonely, alone in his house.

‘I kept hanging out with her’

I didn’t understand it: for months I stood crying on her doorstep because of that man, and in the evening she crawled between the sheets with him? And her own husband? He knew nothing, she said. “But I thought you would understand.”

I was dumbfounded, couldn’t even get angry. I just suppressed what she had just told me. After that night, I continued to interact with her as if nothing had happened.

Cheated

Months later I went on vacation with another friend. We are both divorced mothers. We were poolside when I blurted out the whole story. “And you’ve been keeping this to yourself all this time?” my girlfriend called. “Girl, you don’t need enemies with friends like that.” I broke. Like I needed someone else’s validation to realize I felt terribly cheated.

With my feet in the wading pool, I texted Zelda that same afternoon I was too hurt to ever trust her again. She was furious. Called me a no-brainer and a hypocritical poser. I ended our friendship on the spot. I never regretted it for a second.”
