Tesla e-cars are old-fashioned: comparison reveals the frightening truth

E-cars should not only shine with the emission-free drive. The race for the future of mobility has long been about technical superiority and being up-to-date. In the latter case in particular, pioneer Tesla is at a disadvantage – and quite clearly.

Tesla looks old: No other electric car has remained untouched for so long

When it comes to the age of the car lineup, Tesla looks really old compared to the competition. Only one manufacturer in the world has older cars on average than the electric pioneer of all people, who is shaping the future of the industry. During Teslas portfolio on average proud 7.8 years old only the Russian brand Lada counts even more Lenze: On average, the models are biblical 18.9 years old.

This is the result of an evaluation by automotive expert Juan Felipe Munoz for the portal Insideevs. It is not about how long the cars are used. But how long the manufacturers keep their model from the idea until a newer version or phase-out. According to Munoz, facelifts are not included in this.

Young brands with few new models usually do well. the top 3 form isozu from Japan and the two Chinese brands XPeng and NOK. The average age of their models is 2.6 years. Honda has the youngest lineup of larger manufacturers with at least 20 models, followed by Hyundai and Geely. Mercedes in 5th place refreshes its offer quite often.

On average, Nissan has the oldest portfolio of volume manufacturers. With Stellantis and Renault, two European manufacturers follow.

The price of a new car is often more important than its age. Combustion engines and electric vehicles are fighting a close race:

Old, but not outdated: Tesla can continue to impress with electric cars

The fact that Tesla has the second-oldest lineup of all automakers in the world doesn’t have to be a negative thing, however. The e-car manufacturer was a few years ahead of the development of the market with its Stromern and has the style of many other e-carsthat are available today. If everyone is emulating Tesla, it will take longer for the Tesla style to go out of fashion.

Anyone who sticks to a model for a long time also saves on development costs. Added to this is the focus on software at Tesla. With updates, the electric cars are kept up to date longer. Over the air updates are becoming the norm in the industry. The age of a car model is likely to lose its meaningfulness in the future. Nevertheless, it is strange that an innovative manufacturer like Tesla belongs to the scrap heap in this respect.
